' '., WILLOW SPRINGS, CAL., Feb. 14, 1971 - This year is just seven weeks old but the A.C.A. has already run five road race events this season. If the road racer thinks that he has not had the chance to run much in the past year he had better take a good look at what he has in store for himself in the next few weeks, Feb. 21 Carlsbad, Feb. 28 Riverside and Daytona in March. . Just the word Daytona every' year seems to bring people out to their hometown road race course to see what all the hoopla is about, and the California fans are no different, Road racing is that part of motorcycling that can only be compared to a great ballet or fine music, it is the smoothest, fastest, most graceful part of the motor sport and the fine tuning of the racing bike is truly music to the ear of any road race fan. All th is was put togeth er on Valentine's Day at Willow Springs for a fine day of competition, competition that will set the style for the big oDe in Florida. Looking like a sure thing for the winner's circle this year is Kawasaki mounted Hurley Wilvert who pulled out the first place money in the Hooligan event, just ahead of two more Kawasakis, piloted by Marty Lunde and Dave Damron. Steve McLaughlin on his mighty Honda Four put on the show of the day as he outran by far the rest of the field in the Open Production event. As might be expected, someone said "a good close look at the inside of the engine might be interesting". On the other side of the size coin, top award went to the oldest road racer competing in the country today, Ed Kelly, on his 50cc Tarbo. Ed is a sexagenarian and has more time on a motorcycle than some of his competitors have years on this earth. With no less than 28 different classes and events, anyone that wants to get into road racing can fird a class and place to enler his bike in competi, tion. Grand Prix rider Howard Lynggard for the past several race meets has been impressing spectators with his style and more important the competition with his winning abilities. Howard, on his 350cc Yamaha, has the class dominators, Dave Damron, Jerry Greene, John McGilI.vray and Pat Evans muttering to themselves on what it's going to take to get back on the front running position, ext week at Carlsbad will show if the pack comes up with a new strategy.
