Cold, WeI, Foggy H.B.C.P. Falls To Parkening By Gary Schmythe HUNTINGTON BEACH, CAL., Jan. 31, 1971 - A cold, damp, miserable clay had little, if any, affect on the near capacity crowd of those stout·hearted motocross riders and all of their fans as Huntington Beach Racing Association got this weekend's meeting underway. The track was in fairly good condition, but the mud hole took its toU of riders in every heat, a snorkle on the helmet could become standard equipment. The heat was turned on full blast as the 100 Novice got under way and it was Mark Tyer (Kaw) going the full I route, Dave Montgomery (Hod) second and Mark Dobbs (Hod) third. Tyer laid it down coming out of a comer and Montgomery got out in front, as they had finished the next lap Tyer had the lead again and never let go. Bill Henderson (Yam) has found it, put· it all together, on his second outing to this race track, picking up a much deserved win in the 125 Nov. Div. A. Bob Hansen (Yam) ran a good second, and 13-year-old John Lewis (Pen) came on strong for a well eamed third. Bill Blyth (Pen), Mike Paulsell (Yam), got jammed up on the start, passed in heavy traffic, and before lap one was over had a commanding lead over the rest of the field. Tony ~gers (Yam), and Tom Chuning (Yam)., had it going for second and third, Rogers made it home first, for second,. Chuning grabbed third. Let's give credit where due, earlier in the race, coming out of an off camber turn Chuning dropped it, got hit by another rider, got it all back in shape and was able to come on for third, And so went the 125 Expert. That ever running Greeves of one J. L. Siebrandt found its way out in front again in the 250 Expert, and giving 01' J. L. a whole handful of fight was B. McDougal (Yam); in solid third was W. Gardner (055). Open Experts Bill Parkening (C-Z) and Marshall Jennings (Hus) had a real thing going, Jennings got a little out of shape and _Park~ning blasted into the lead, going on for the win. Back in the number three spot was Rick Baxter (Mai); fourth went to Howard Jacobs (Hus). This weekend the HRA will have motocross on both Saturday and Sunday. (Results on page 18) (Yam), Brad McKee (Bul), and Roy De Winter (Yam) set a blistering pace, and pretty much ran their own 125 Nov. Div. B race ahead of the rest of the pack. Blyth finally cracked it and went on for the win; Paulsell second; McKee going for third; De Winter had to settle for fourth. The 250 Novices came screaming through the fog and Gary Wells (Hus) went screaming into the lead, screaming through the mud hole with rooster tails flying a mile high from the front wheel. Right along and givinl! him a heads up battle was Jim Hobbs (Mai), who was in turn having a bad time with Doug Hurst (C-z) and so it went, as listed. The top honors in the Open Novice went to Rick Remelin (Hus) doing his thing, Bob Madden (C-Z) and Mike Stoner (Mai) having a go for second spot. Madden made good on his move, Stoner retained third. The combination 100-125 Expert (trophied separately) found the alphabet put to good use, all one could see was letters, Robert Rowl (Hod) out in front, John Evans (Hon) second and Paul Cloward running a hard third.
