For instance, .David Aldana rode under No. 38x last year and had a magnificent year even he did nave his ups and downs but in 1971 wbcn he first comes to the starting line you can tell by his number what he did accomplish last year. Politics had always been involved in granting numbers. A few years back people wrote lctters to the paper. etc. because a first year Expert was granted a number when others still hadn't made it. Then we had a case where a ridcr showed up halfway through the season with a national number on, and according to th e rules that was a no-no. Well, even if we all do get a bit sentimental about numbers belonging to certain men. we'll go along with the times. if it helps the sport, Ncxt weck. unless something else pops up to write about. wait 'til you get to thc bit about how the FlM handles the motocross startcrs for the Grand Prix! Under the present regulations therc's a chance that John Banks on his good old Beezer couldn't get a starting place and other terrific riders have absolutely no chance at all to have a go for the World Championship in either division. Still, things are finally starting to change fast within the organizations who govern our sport. They are finally starting to listen to the guy who pays the tab. thc rider. Hurray! ~ MOTOCROSS NO POST ENTRIES AT HARE SCRAMBLES by Orange County M.C., The Great Race is coming to Indian Dunes I've written before about Carl Cranke who belongs to the Dirt Diggers North. if you watched how well he went at Hopetown you know that he's really one of the up and coming riders. Mud, slosh. nothing bothers him. Other people have noticed this too, so Carl is now the owner of an AJS, making the switch from a C-Z, A-Jay, you couldn't have picked a better man. may your tea and crumpets always be warm (and no. I still don't have an uncle who is chairman of the board!) Back to the national numbering system again. In one way some of the riders like it because it does away with the politics as to who gets a national number. 1 understand that thcre have been times when a man riding almost consistently has not been able to get a national number because some were being held by a rider who wasn't exactly Uretired" but was only competing in, say. just one national a year and not really doing much else the rest of the time to merit holding a national number. A lot of riders can never make number one; the talent just isn't there; you've either got it born in you or you haven't, Under the new system a rider making his way up through the ranks can earn a number like 98 his first year. next ycar maybe he'll progress up to somewhere in the twenties and his numbcr plate will sbow the fans how he is progressing. He may never get any higher than a low I digit single number but he can show the crowd when he· Assoc., Inc. at Cow Palace, Brisbane, Calif.
