Durand Wins Funny Money HARE SCRAMBLES HARDENED BY IVMC IS GREAT! By Bob Grant SINCE I GOT THIS IMPERIAL VALLEY, CAL., Jan. 24, 1971 - Tbe Imperial Valley MC held the second District 38 points event of the year out here on the edge of the Navy's old bombing range. Race chairman, Bob Groulef said it would be a cballenging course because "I'm tired of these easy bundred-milers run down graded roads and all." And cballenging it was, as the thirteen mile course resembled a thirteen-mile motocross run for five loops. The race started with the Experts of all classes going first, followed about five minutes later by the Novices. Going to the first check, there was no smoke bomb for fear the Navy might retaliate. The course followed some small rocky hills and was generally fast. From tltere the course was almost all demanding with only short straights and some real bad dust bowls. Ken Renick (7) on a Husky, took the lead from the start but was beaten to the first check by Jeff Willis (13) on a Montesa. Willis, however, got there by some dubious course which later led to his disqualification. Renick regained the lead and came around at the end of the first loop first with a good lead. Willis was second followed by Bill Silverthorn (Husky), Curtis Smith (C-Z), and Mickey Quade (Husky). Renick continued to lead througb the nex t four loops and came in first overall, something be's been tbreatening to do for quite a wbile, The rough course took its toll as Willis dropped out with broken machinery and Bill Silverthorn dropped ou t after the third loop, Bill bas just over over a two week bout with hepatitis. Second overall was Curtis Smith, moving up to the Open class for the first time on a new CZ. Tbird was MickeyQuade for the second week in a row. Fourth and first 250 was Terry Brown (6) on a Husky. Rick Vesco (2r) on a Puch was first 125. First Novice was Jerry Baker riding a 250 Husky. - Ed Durand 10.1 Using the wrench and a lever bar, lock the nut to the top piece firmly. this is important as the center shaft could loosen under useage and allow the shock to come apart. 11,) Finally lever the buffer rubber up around the lock nut and insert the new mounting rubbers and sleeves and then repeat the process on the other shock. Reinstall the shocks and you are read'y to roll. 1 t _ ·- - -_ _ I In our never ending quest to give aw"y the newspaper's money, the Finish the Funny contest is a big help.
