Jack Simmons and Bill Manley ended their short retirement and regulars George Kerker and McLaughlin put on the show. Manly and McLaughlin started right off together and pulled away from the rest of everyone as Kereker was held up in traffic. As Kerker picked his way through, McLaughlin's horsepower kept him in front of Manley, who was beginning to slow down. Suddenly, the firey crash of Harvey gave Kerker a chance to pick up on the Honda as the spill happened in front of McLaughlin. The lead changed on the next to last lap only to have McLaughlin regain the lead on the straight. Kerker then made a great pass on the inside of turn one with McLaughlin still hot on h,s ta,l. Kerker sewed up the win by passing two cycles going up the trill, putting them between himself and McL1ughlin. Mike Wozneak brought in the win in the 350 class by driving a very consistent race on his Yamaha. Damron nailed down second. Dick Kilgore won the 500 class on his Mach III. In th e ligh tweigh t production race, Jim Damron notched his second win in a row over Pat Evans. ThiS was the race that saw the Premier Helmet Co. rewarding each class winner with a helmet. For grabbing class wins today, Roger Bitner, Pitil Thompson, Bruce Martin, Dan Guinn and Jim Damron are all a helmet richer. The next road race is at Willow Springs on Feb. 14. By Jon Stevens CARLSBAD, CAL., Jan. 31, 1971 Howard Lynggard took home the honors in the Open GP' race today at Carlsbad Raceway. His win was made difficult by the constant challenge of Dave Damron on his 500 Kawasaki. At the start of the race, Damron held the advantage followed by John McGillivray on a 360 Yamaha, Steve McLaughlin on his super Honda and Lynggard on his 350 Yamaha. Shortly, McLaughlin dropped out and Lynggard got by McGillivray and set his sigh ts on Damron. The order ..remained the same for several laps untll Lynggard finally caught and passed the leader. McGillivary was still in third when, coming out of tum one, he grabbed too much clu tch and crashed, putting him out of the race. The most spectacular spill of the day belonged to Terry Harvey. As he was braking for the first turn, he crashe,d and his Bultaco immediately caught fire and pretty well destroyed itself before the flames could be extinguished two racers, riders & readers... SUBSCRIBE minutes later. Pat Evans and Steve Fraschauer went at it twice during the day with Evans (200 Yam) decisioning Fraschauer's 125 Yamaha both times, Steve nearly won their second encounter which was the day's money race. Were it not for the fact that he was giving away 75ccs, he would have won as he was faster through the comers. The 250 Sr. GP saw Jerry Greene take his first win in a long time, besting McGillivray and Tom White. The only real challenger to Greene and McGillivray was Lynggard; who appeared to be on his way to a win when his rear brake failed to return in tum one causing him to do a Laugh-In type crash. Howard didn't find it laughable at all, however. The Heavyweight Production races provided its usual share of excitement.
