Roberts, Tom Poteet, and Mitch Mayes each pulled off an Expert class win today at the Lost Coyotes' European Scrambles, but 17-year-old Terry Clark was the outstanding rider of the day. Clark astounded hundreds of riders and spectators alike with a second-place finish among the 250 Experts aboard a Harley-Davidson Baja 125. Clark started his day off with the trailbikes where he held the top position from the start. After a lap, however, he threw a chain and finished the next loop dead last. Instead of finishing the race, he got in the line to start with the next event, the 250's. At the drop of the banner, it was Larry Pfutzenrueter and Clark 'way out front and Tom Poteet just a bit back. Terry would get in front of Larry on the level or downhill sections while Larry would get it back on the sections demanding more beans. Meanwhile, Poteet passed 'em both, zap! At the end of the third and final loop, it was Poteet and, about ten· seconds later, Terry Clark, all to a chorus of whoops and hollers from the pleased specs. Pfutzenrueter, still away from the rest of the pack, took an easy third. J.N. Roberts scored a huge victory in the Heavyweigh t division. By the end of the first eigh t-mile loop Roberts had an easy half a mile on the next four dudes. They were Ron N elson, Rich Thorwaldson, Shorty Rogers, and HEAVYWEIGHT 1. Whitey Martino 2. At the end of the second round it was Roberts with an even bigger lead over Nelson, who had a comfortable lead over Thorwaldson. Rogers parted compluiy with his bike in mid-air and Martino just never came around again. (A later ch.eck with the Checkers and some phone calls that night didn't turn up anything either. Maybe he was kidnaped by a jealous motorcycle distributor.) One more lap and that is how they finished: Roberts, Nelson, Thorwaldson, and another fine ride by George Walker on his new Kawasaki. After Terry Clark had the trouble mentioned earlier in the trailbike competition Mitch Mayes took over the lead for the balance of the race. Cordis Bro·oks was running third but aced Tom Brooks, Jr., on the last leg for the second spot. Despite an adverse development, the whole show as well-organized with no time wasted ollce things got underway. The adverse development was the fact that the location for the race had to be changed after the club had set up the original one. The Lost Coyotes pulled through like real troupers and the day was efficiently expended long before the sun sank. The place looked nice and tidy, too, thanks to the cooperation of everybody. Incidentally,· someone placed a large, thought-provoking sign at the entrance to the pit area, something like: ·"Leave with your trash - or SUFFER! (Results on page (2)
