Thanks for my suit of armor; I rather needed it after my column on the national
numbering system. It's a bit dented in a couple of places but still intact and I'll have
a few more words on that subject next week. As we all know, there are at least two
sides to every story. We'd love to do that column right now, but there is something
much more important to pull the soap box out for: Noise.
I'm going to get a bit personal on this one so brace yourselves! We've had bikes in
the family now for a few years and some of them are loud (on the track) enough to
shake the leaves off trees. My Hodaka is one and my husband's Greeves could blow a
window out. In our neighborhood over the years we have never had one complaint
from any neighbor over noise inspite of the fact that every time we wash 'em we fire
them up and dry them out, even to the point of puttering down the street and back.
Why? We've got silencers that fit our pipes and always have had them, since before
the big thing got going to silence down bikes, I mean like five or six years ago.
Maybe we'v,e just got nice neighbors but we've never attempted to overdo it by
sounding like big time racers up and 'down the block; it's just not necessary.
I hope most of you read what my editor had to say on the cover page of last
week's paper, that we are in a crisis stage. It's real. I went into a dirt bike shop the
other day and one chap asked if things are really THAT serious. They are.
All of you must be aware by now how four of our local counties, completely ban
riding a bike on private property unless you have written permission from the owner.
The ticket the fuzz gives you won't be funny "ha-ha" when you face the judge and
he tells you the fine! The main reason this situation came about is that some of us
didn't care enough to think about other people and their eardrums. I can admit that
I've been as guilty as the next. There's nothing groovier than sitting on your bike out
in the boonies somewhere, warming it up so others listening just know you've got a
super-bike. Big deal.
There is no mechanical principle that says a machine has to make noise to perform
to its full capability, but because for so long most riders thought this way we've flat
been busted.
'
Back to the personal bit again...last Sunday we decided we'd take our trials
Greeves out for a bit of an airing (I'm still learning' to ride the thumper) and
naturally, it has a muffler on it. That bike acts like a tractor even fully muffled and
we have another little silencer we slip on it for our neighbors benefit. Off we go to a
very small place we know of where the local home owners have always been more
than tolerant of bikes in the past. There were two families with mini-bikes there, all
running so quietly they'd sneak up on your heels and you wouldn't know they were
there, plus another group with go-carts, also running very quietly. We both proceed
to practice a bit on old thumper and then in comes a truck with a
expansion-ehambered two-stroke on it, plus a buddy on another dirt bike who just
rode in.
Well, we can't make a long story out of what happened, but his little plot of land
is just aboutone 0 f the very few r~maining and these kids just shivered the timbers of
every house within a two block radius. Finally, a chap living direct\-
