Steve Stackable charges to stay ahead of Danny Forkey in an action-heavy first motocross of the year in San Antonio, Texas. Yamaha mounted Steve won his class, one of three professional "money" classes. The 250 class was won by John Loughlin and the Open class was won by Mark Carboni. The course was pronounced "Terrific," with fourteen corners squeezed into a little over y, mile. Photo and report by Jeanne Peters. Texas' Border Motocross By Edward C. Beard Where once only jack rabbits, wile horses and an occasional lonesome cowboy on horseback used to travel, the modern hunt for new and different ways for amusement and entertainment· has added spice with a little horsepower, two wheels and the urge for competition to the scenery. One of the fastest rising pastimes to hit Southwestern Texas and New Mexico is the Motocross and the Flat Track racing of motorcycles. The idea of racing rnotorcycles on the desert sands of the Southwest is not so new but the organized racing that has evolved today is. Recently a man named Carlos Murguia purchased 300 acres of bottom land along the Rio Grande River between EI Paso and the New Mexico border and has turned it into a cycling dream. He has marked off a three-quarter mile long cross-country or Motocross track and a half-mile Flat Track. Until Mr. Murguia established his track, motorcycle enthusiasts gathered wherever they could get enough room far enough away from people not to AVE disturb them. Keith Leighty, a leading motorcycle salesman in EI Paso and avid racer himself for over 15 years in the Southwest, says, "this is the big boost that cycling needs here." Murguia says that the track is not well enough known for many out-of-townen to be coming yet but as soon as people from distant towns hear about the track they will start coming. He says, "when they do start coming, the American Motorcycle Association will begin to sanction a few of the races each year." The track has only been open a couple of months and already some people are traveling from Las Cruces, Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico to the track. At present the track is scheduling one Motocross and two Flat Track races per month. The Motocross races ar;e run strictly for trophies. Each entrant must run in three races of 10 laps each making points for a first, second or third. After all of the heats of each class are run, the points are added and the places awarded on the number of accumulated points. In the Flat Track races, the entrants are racing for a percentage of the gate receipts. wheel length! Only 8 riders lined up in the 125 Sr., but everyone knew they were in for an exciting race. With Jones, Priddy, Musick, Menefee and four other good riders battling. As they rounded the second tum 1usick, Jones and Priddy were so close Jones nudged Musi~k, throwing J ones for a spill and taking Priddy with him, leaving it wide open for Musick. Sam Menefee took over second place but Musick was long gone and there was no catching him. As the 250 Srs. came into that lint tum they were so close they seemed welded together. Rocky Temmons (CZ) eme'l~ed with the lead, with Alan Dye (Ossa), Kenny Ingram (Montesa) and Anthony Jones (CZ) right on him. As they came back around it was Temmons, Jones then Dye. Then suddenly J ones executed a spectacular wipe-out with his CZ landing right on top of him. To everyone's surprise he jumped up and got back in the race, but was was unable to catch the leaders again. Dye grabbed the lead in the second heat, then Jones, Snipes and Temmons. On the back side of the track Jones passed Dye and led to the finish. In the fourth lap Temmons moved up to second place for a little while but lost it again to Dye. As they neared the finish Dye and Temmons were welded again, but Dye got a little edge on him and came in ahead. In the last heat J ones was out front alI five laps, while Dye, Snipes, Elam and Temmons fought for second, alternating their positions back and forth. Jones came in frrst, then Dye and Temmons. The Open class found Don Osborne on the 400 Maico from Waco getting the lead on the start, followed by John Wooley (360 CZ), with Joe Rachel (360 Mako) in third. By the end of the first lap Rachel had taken the lead and Phil Snipes (360 CZ) moved up to second followed by Wyman Priddy (350 Kawasaki). Osborne soon dropped back to fourth. At the end of the second lap Priddy had worked his way to the front, with Rachel second and Snipes third_ Ed Terrell (400 Husky) who had gotten off to a bad start was now in fourth place. Snipes passed Rachel again and held second to the finish. In the second moto Snipes grabbed the lead and stayed there all the way. The last moto and the last race for the day has Priddy take the lead with Snipes and Osborne bearing down on him. Snipes passes Priddy, but only for a few seconds, Priddy passes him back. Osborne loses his third place position toTerrell. Snipes and Priddy are s~de ~y side fighting for the lead. Ed IS stIll third. In the third lap Priddy loses his brakes and Snipes takes over. Terrell passes Priddy who stays in there (brakes or no brakes), and at the fmish it's Snipes, Terrell and Priddy.
