TIle , By Rod Breaker Workshop MORE ON TOOLS FOR THE HOME WORKSHOP By Rod Breaker In addition to the tools that you can purchase for your home workshop, there are always a few that you make up -out of necessity. Many times a little ingenuity can' save many dollars when it comes to some special tools that have enormous price tags. Sometimes you may 'even have to invent a tooL to do a job, but mostly the rider at home just needs something to do the job once or twice.. For instance, take clutch hub nuts and countershaft sprocket nuts.-When the rider at home has his engine out of the frame, he is hard pressed to loosen these nuts due to the fact that' the entire unit wants to revolve. Where the professional mechanic would resort to a pneuma tic imparts' wrench to zap it off, the average ,rider at home is not quite s? fo.rtunate. Of course you can always make sure that you loosen these while the engIne IS 111 the frame and the rear chain attached, this way you can loosen the clutch hub nut by putting the engine in gear and holding the rear brake, and the rear brake w1l1 also suffice to hold the countershaft sprocket while the nut is loosened. Naturally one nev~r thinks about these things until the engine is on the bench, so here are a couple of Ideas that can be used. The components are not expensive and they can be retained for future use. Here is a holding tool made to :hold Triumph and late BS,o. clutch hubs. The idea behind If a driving and a driven p'late are [lot readily available for your machine, this system might this one is that by welding a driven plate and a drivir.rg plate together (concentrically I be easier and cheaper. Merely obtain a short might add). the resistance of removing the nut is transferred to the outer hub and thus to the crank via the primary chain. With the top end on the machine and the spark plugs in, the engi ne compression is usually enough resistance to do the job. If the top end is off, section of chain the same size as on your machine and either pin it or weld it to a short length of bar or pipe. Now by wrappi n9 it in the direction against which the wrench is pulling. it makes an effective holder. This can Make Noise -Not Silence By John Bethea Apparently, a few motorcycle dealers in the Southern California area became very upset when we published our "Crisis In The Dirt" article several weeks ago. But, this was to be expected when it is realized that you can't please everybody. The most predominate reason for their unfavorable reaction is -its effect on sales motorcycle sales - which is their livelihood. For months we have been -saying the current crisis would occur if we continued to be docile. "Sales are still good, so why do anything about'it," was these dealers' general attitude. So, they did little or nothing. Now that the crisis has finally arrived and been made publiC, they wish to continue to remain silent so their sales won't be affected. This is a deception to the public, the buying public, the consumers which are the heart of this industry and of every industry. Any good business man will admit that you cannot continue a strong business if you continue to deceive your buyers. These dealers also fail to realize, or have forgotten, that if they go out of business, this newspaper will soon follow. If you close your eyes, the problems you face won't disappear; and if you remain silent, it is a sign of admission on your part that everything meets with your approval. Silence is golden for the contented, but not for the oppressed and, dissatisfied. We have been silent too long and all we have to show for it is this current crisis._ Do not continue deceiving y"ourseif by thinking the situation will get better before it gets worse. Freedoms and human rights are not fully realized until they are lost and once lost, people will never get them back fully and unscathed. We have allowed ourselves to be subjected to unjust laws by remaining silent, except for those few who voiced their objections. But, they were meek objections of only a few hundred out of millions. Can one really be shocked or surprised that this crisis has occurred when we've all done little or nothing to prevent it? Some were and still are, and they will continue to be if they remain silent. These dealers, rapidly becoming the "silent minority" of the motorcycle industry, would be very happy if this newspaper halted our exposure of the crisis. They would be very pleased if the public were denied access or knowledge of the facts that are detrimental to our sport. We cannot allow ourselves to be hindered by these considerations. . As a newspaper, our job is to inform the public with news - all the news of importance to them, good and b'ad. A newspaper which filters out the bad and only prints the good is no longer a newspaper; it is a mockery to free journalism and a disrespectful "joke" to its readers. Nobody does anything about repression until he is subjected to it himself. By blowing the whistle on off-road restriction, maybe we can alert every motorcyclist before it happens to him, and, hopefully, prevent it from getting worse. It was mistakenly reported in last issue that Bob Hershey took second place in the 250cc Sr. Division at Oak Creek Ranch Jan. 17 riding an AJS. Actually, Hershey was mounted on a Mid-Valley sponsored CZ. You got that? an aluminum yoke placed beneath the rods' BUENA PARK CYCLE ....................I mind that if you must take 'off both the clutch and the countershaft sprocket, the clutch Two major barriers, the 8-second and the 170 mph quarter-mile, are expected . to be shattered at the history making second annual U.S. Fuel and Cas Motorcycle Nationals to be staged at Irwindale Raceway Feb. 20-2.1. It might be nice if one of the manufacturers who sell a hundred thousand "Enduro" motorcycles offered to pick- up the printing tab for the enduro riding book. It would cost less than one billboard and b.e better advertising. Dave Evans is the probable winner of this 93·mile enduro, having an unofficial score of -4, while his chief competitor Bud Houseman lost -6. The card scoring system employed in the last two CERA 'runs is very effective, much better than the archaic system generally used in California E-nduros. Oh, did you want to know about Joe Leonard and Dick Mann? They were a couple of Class "C" riders who signed up and had a good time on their trailbikes.
