• POINT STANDINGS DIST. 37 DESERT LIGHTWEIGHT FINAL Continued Number 1 Wins moved off a little to the right and was picking off a couple riders when I happened to look off to the left. On the other side was a sort of a natural culvert, in amongst the rocks and boulders, on a slope that was much steeper than the one we were on, Terry Clark is passing all of us! He had to cross the culvert to get back on the trail - in front of us - and he got Roing too fast. Over the nex t hill the trail dropped away very sharply and Terry apparently locked up everything to keep from . sailing out into space, and fell down. All • twenty of us repassed him while he was "'----'_ picking up his bike. It took him almost half a mile to catch up and go around again. One incident. But he passed four hundred bikes in the course of that 2 hour race! Oh yes, he won! The "amateur" class of the trailbike railroad tracks and watching at crossroads. The club has 80 active members and I think every single one of them was working the. course this moming. There was never a jam-up at a check; most times your card got marked two or three times. Even the .tart was on time. The cooperation that I got in gathering the results was both unusual and highly appreciated. Betty Talley had the results all written out for me by the time I got to the San Bernardino Club encampment after the race. The trailbikes left 20 minutes after the big bikes; the new rules dop.'t apply yet. When they .do, Whitey and Rich might have someone else to worry about. Terry Clark's little Harley goes so fast it's unreal! Somewhere near the end of the first loop I was on one of these steep rocky downhills, where everyone goes in single file and has one foot down. There were about twenty bikes in line. I kind of like those spots and I had George Walker, Expert No.6, was 3rd overall on a Kawasaki Bighorn. set is getting to be pretty tough. The amateurs were in 2nd, 7th, 8th and 10th places. Jack Stonisifier, who only made amateur a couple months back, was In second, beating experts Steve Fortner, Jim Sumner and AI Lund. The novice class is no piece of cake either. Two novices were in the first ten places, Steve Goldberg was 6th overall and Roger Dien wasninth../an Ditson'was the first gal rider, finishing a respectable 33rd and Red Dot Patty Domay was second. Novices in the big bike class didn't fare so well. The first one in was James Hill, finishing a distant 48th. First amateur was Larry Mahoney, in 4th overall, while in 5th was the lightweight winner, expert Wes Anderson Jr. There were 050 starters, about 380 finishers. After the race was over, the San Bernardino Club literally scoured the 100. . . I . biOI. camp area, I eavmg It, su~ect, ~ etter 102. shape than they found .t. Then- next 103 event is !'
