WILLOW SPRINGS, ROSAMOND,
CAL., Jan. 17, 1971 - With ideal race
and weather conditions, the A.C.A. ran
its first road race of the 1971 point
S'eason. There was one major change in
the standard program - no heat races.
This gave more time for practice and
allowed more laps in each feature event.
Old track records fell in the
Production and G.P. classes. John
McGillivray did it, not once but twice.
He went out first on his production
BSA Rocket 3 and ran the fastest lap
ever turned by a production bike at
Willow Springs. He then went out to
better the old record of Cal Rayborn.
one minute, 39.6 seconds. 1n the G.P.
class, McGillivray and his 250cc Yamaha
ran a 1:39 flat and he is now the fastest
in both classes.
Walt Fulton Jr. and Dave Damron
put on a show in the 500cc G.P. class
that had to be the highlight of the day.
The lead changed several times each lap.
ine of the ten laps wen t to Damron.
But that all-important tenth and final
lap went to Walt Fulton Jr. on his
Kawasaki.
Junior G.P. classes are the hope and
future of road race events. Young Wes
Cooley, on a Greeves, in the 200cc G.P.
class showed that spending a lifetime
working with his father around
motorcycle racers clicked for him. Wes
won, and did it with all the class of a
Senior rider.
Eastern racer Brent Thompson found
the course to be quite a change, and for
a new Jr. Open -Class rider, Thompson
did just fine for 'himself with the Open
Class win on his BSA Rocket G.P.
Prizw money and helmets by
Premiere went to Jerry Christopher,
Mike Wozniak, Dick Kilgroe and Steve
Mct.aughlin. Top money award went to
Kawasaki-mounted Walt Fulton Jr.
Today marked one more step
forward for the A.C.A. to make road
racing pay.
