Bob Sand.,rs failed to maintain his
hotshoe classification as he could not
keep pace with last week's eight
victories at Trojan Speedway. Tonight,
the speedy Kawasaki rider only won six;
four mains and two trophy dashes,
bringing his total for the new year to
eight mains and six dashes.
In the 100 TT Main, Sanders had to
hold off last year's standout Tom
Horton to take the win, whereas in the
125 TT it was Gregg Cunningham
supplying the competition.
Sanders had to hold off Kirk
Redding in the 100 FT Main and John
Corbett in the 125 FT.
Ron Powell rode his Bultaco to
victory in the 250 TT Main, getting
most of his rivalry from Bob Doornbos
and Horton.
Dan Corbett finally caught and
passed Sanders on the final lap of the
250 FT Main to gain the checkered.
Corbett also won the 125 and 250 FT
Dashes. Sanders bagged the 100 FT and
125 TT Dashes, Bob Byers the 100 TT
Dash and Bob Doornbos the 250 IT
Dash.

MAD. SQ. GARDEN
HERALD NE~ ERA
RACES
On Monday night; January 25,
motorcycle racing will 'return to New
York City for the first time in 25 years.
The AMA short track races in Madison
Square Garden on that night may not be
for national championship points, but
they will perhaps be the most important
mlc races this decade. Promoted, by
Trojan Enterprises and sponsored by
Yamaha, this event will bring
motorcycling out of the sticks and into
the "'eart of the Big City. New York is
the headquarters o( national media,
both for the air waves and print, yet
New Yorkers are the most provincial of
people...if it doesn't happen in New
York, they don't know of it.
The last time New York saw a
motorcycle race was ~hortly after the
war, when Class A speedway took place
at Yankee Stadium and outdrew the
New York Yankees baseball games.
Cycle News will hold up its presses
for the first time to bring readers the
story of the first Madison Square
Garden races in the issue published that
night.
