.carnegie·Grow'" Things are really buzzing these days for the Carnegie Cyc'le Park. Established last summer to serve the needs of Motorcyclists and Dune Buggy Drivers from the Bay Area and San joaquin Valley region, the big park offers 1560 acres of inviting and challenging topography ranging up the bold convolutions of the Livermore hills from a convenient stretch of two and a half miles of road frontage. It is the largest facility·of its kind in CaHfornia, according to veteran motorcycle racer john "Bud" Brillisour of Castro Valley, who is president of the operating agency. And it is being developed in accordance with precepts espoused by the East Bay Regional Parks District, which views the new park as a welcome adjunct to its own nearby Del Valle Regional Park. On jan. 8, 160 young sycamore tree S were planted in random style down the park's main valley. Tony Smi~, Del Valle's manager, was on hand to advise the Carnegie workers as to the most practical and efficient methods of using such plantings in ecologically oriented enhancement of the region's natural resources. Lending a bit of extra excitement to the occasion was an appearance by Dick "Buggs" Mann of San Pablo, America '5 fourth·ranking professional motorcycle racer. Mann brought in the' first of the sycamores on the handlebars of his bike, riding in dramatically on one wheel as if ... his mount were an eagerly rarin' charger. He was joined by cute nine-year-old Kelly Brillisour, who had a smaller tree on her minibike. Later, Mann gave a brief exhibition of hill climbing and racing techniques for those who had assembled. ~ w Z w oJ C,) > C,) Dick Mann, winner of Daytona "200", rushes first tree to Carnegie Cycle Park's pl,anting ceremonY,.as Karyn, Laurie and Cindy Brillisour pause to watch. Everyone thought that the turnout would be big, but the 251 entries were more than expected. This classic annual event of the Rocky Mountains, has captured riders' imagination since it was first run in the 19·20s. Who will be the first motorcyclist on top of Pikes Peak each year? This year, as in the previous two years, it was Bill Thomas from Denver. His snorting 400cc Husky carried him out of the dust of tile mass-started machines. The riders lined up on the toll road at Glen Cove with the expert rated men in front. The flag dropped at exactly noon and, using fallen bikes for traction, the whole herd charged the seven miles to the 14,110 foot summit. Snow was scarce, so this year it was a graded road dash. The Dusters of Colorado Springs did a fine job of organizing. Special number plates were issued all contestants along with highball straws and rubber bands to hold them on. The usual confusion of numbers usually found at this event was thus eliminated. The record entry, coupled with a totai lack of snow, caused some problem at the top. After the first 50 or so reached th.e top, the riders 'were crossing the line faster than their numbers could be read into a tape recorder. Next year a recorder will be at the switchback just below the summit to help with that problem. Custom trophies were handed out by the Dusters after the event. All agreed it was a bang up affair despite the lack of snow. COLORADO TRIALS J I I COLISEUM CYCLE MAIL and ACCESSORY CO. , ~ KAWASAKI _ ~ MOTORCYCLES 395'8 E. 14th ST., OAKLAND, CAL. Both Experts were in a championship points deadlock at the start of the Rocky Mountain Trials Assn. e"ent held at the Sprucewood Inn in the mountains southwest of Denver. The nine technically difficult traps were set by H. Hauptman and W. Jantz. They were run three times by Novices in the morning, and Experts in the afternoon, with interesting changes being made to bring out the skills of the Experts.
