The new Perris, Calif. track has proved a safe one with only a couple of riders able to claim the distinction of making it through the tires to the fence in the sweeper. Steve Tinsly is one who has that claim to fame. A tli..ird time out Novice Terry Stanart is the only one who was seriously injured and he has vowed to return. Perris has also been plagued with injunctions for noise. The first time around the Burtons settled out of court bu t the same people have ~eopened the case and this time around they will go all the way whether good, bad or indifferent. Because of these problems cash prizes were awarded to riders who won using silencers. Larry Schwimmer, Paul Lambert, and Don Frauenberger collected a bit of the folding stuff and it proved that it doesn't take noise to win. Stan Bateman started out trying to race Tf' and ended up with a recording contract with Capitol Records. The story of how he got that you wouldn't believe. Stan offer.ed to buy a trophy he was so desperate. Let's hope he doesn't have to buy his own records. Skip Gallagher has moved from four strokes to two strokes as he is now the Service Manager for Suzuki Sport Spot in Ontario, Calif. which by the way has got a new owner. Good luck to both the new owner and Skip. F or the first time Montesa let it be known that they are a strong threat in the 250cc class. Don's Tire and Cycle also of Ontario is largely responsible as a good portion of "Viva" riders were his, such as Nate Ezell.who is one very good stunt rider to boot. There were whole bunches of riders who moved into Perris Amateur ratings like Jon Mudd, Taylor Sisco, Greg . White, Rick Draudt, Bruce Prior, Larry Stapleton, Boyd Mason, and -Bill Goeff to name a few. Doug Mason has to stand ou t as the rider who held the best win record. George Gillespie, "the quiet one" is another rider who raised a lot of eyebrows when he went after' the big boys and got them. The Stanford brothers have also made some very big waves. Walt Foster turned on to big bikes and turned out to be the sleeper of the year. The mini-bikes came into their own this season and I hope they continue, especially since David Jones is my own and we have another one warming up. Steve Sisco and Ricky Hart are the top dogs of. the mini·bikers and gave us all some good racing. Racing at Perris will resume sometime in February. ROCKCATCHER FROM WEBCO A new addition to the expanding product line at Webco is the popular _ Jofa mouth guard as used by the European superstars iri the retent Inter-Am and Trans-AMA races.
