Try And Top This. • • DAYTONA BEACH, FLA., Jan. 8, 1971 - The upcoming first annual Winter AMA Motocross Series, a unique seven-event motorcycle program limited to the state of Florida, took on added significance recently when the Falstaff Brewing Corporation announced an impressive list of special Falstaff awards for the winners of the two competition classes. . The $12,150 series opens in Orlando, Sunday, January 24, and closes at Daytona International Speedway, Saturday, March 13, during the 30th annual Daytona Motorcycle Classics. Riders will be competing in three 250cc and Open classes. Falstaff will award winners in each class Rolex watches and $500 in cash. The second-place riders will be awarded $200 and third place finishers will receive $100 each from the Falstaff award program. S-K Tool Division of Dresser Industries has also joined the list of firms participating in the contingency awards for the series. Chief mechanics on the class-winning bikes will each receive elaborate tool sets from S-K. Falstaff and S-K awards. will be made following the final event of the serles in the Daytona victory lane. The series moves from the Orlando opener to Jacksonville for a January 31 event. St. Petersburg, February 14, Tallahassee, February 28, will follow. The competition moves to Ft. Pierce, March 7, before coming to Daytona for the finale. Gary Bailey will host a motocross school on the Saturday before each event in the senes. . Point Freezes Over By Dave Brown ApPLE VALLEY, CALIF., Jan. 3, 1971 - A 33-degree high temperature did not persuade 232 motocross riders from sitting home today and the kickoff 'for the 1971 season at Deadman's point was a success. Tne 100 Intermediate class once again fell to rapid Ed Irsic aboard his potent Honda while Craig Lee pumped his Van Tech Yamaha to a 1-00 Senior win. DeWayne Jones mounted his brother's Yamaha and proceeded to top the 125 Sr. class. It was his first visit to BURCHAM IS TOP SO. CAL. ENDURO MAN . Topping the list of 245 riders who earned points in seven 1970 Distfict 37 Enduros is Rickman rider Gene Burcham. Burcham scored 517 points, edging out Bob S teffanJ who rode Yamaha and H-D brands to second place overall with 444 points. Burcham was actually the points winner in 1969 as well, but a computing error awarded the high point trophy to Phil TurgeSQD, who was the lightweight high pointer that year, ac~,?rding to points steward Bill Adams. Third place in the standings is Lyle Taylor, who rides a Triumph TR-6, making the top three a sweep for Shamrock M.C. members. Fourth is Dave Evans, who rode Yamaha, and fifth is a recent arrival from Northern California. Bill Ocheltree, a Greeves pilot. Riders placing from 180 to. 245 are listed with only one point, owing to a scoring system that will De changed this season, according to Adams, to better separate the relative abilities of the riders. (Standings on page 2.1) FORMS LAND COMMITTEE USE LONG BEAca, CALIF., Jan. 9,1971One of the most timely moves by the Motorcycle Industry Council was the decision to form a Land Use Committee and the appointment of John Taylor to the post of Chairman by E.W. 'Pete' Colman, the Council's President. The members of the Land Use Committee have been selected for their familiarity and involvement with off-road riding. The Committee members are Alan M,asek, Russell March, Bill Gleason, Paul Ditzel, Tom Sargent. Bob Hicks, John Larsen, Ron Sloau, Paul McCrillis, Chuck Clayton and John Wycoff, plus six as yet unnamed Regional Directors. One of the first things the comm.!.ttee tackled is the current crisis of off-road land restrictions in California. The 500 Intermediate win went to K. Markling (Hus) as B. Rhoades, also Husky mounted, took the 500 Sr. class.' Junior class winners included J. Carmelle (100 Div. I), D. Sanchez (Div. II), W. Pollock (Div. I1J), T. Gillett (125 Dlv. I), V. Peterson (Div. II)' S. Bebeck (250 Div. I), L. Ramsey (Div. III), S. Ellsbree (500 Div. I) and R. Van Santan (Div. II). S. Jackson and M. Chittwood easily garnered season first place trophies in the Dist. 38 TT standings for 1970. Harmon collected 742 points to out-distance second place R. Ribley's 510 in Open competition; , Vanderpool's 725 in 250 action aced Sal Peluso's 514 effort and Chittwood finished with nearly a 300-point gap ahead of R. Roloff, in the 125 class. These three will be among those honored at the District's Feb. 6 Sports Committee Banquet at Sea World's Atlantis Restaurant in San Diego. (Top 10 in each class in results, page 20.) MARTINO NUMBER 1· Whitey Martino captured the hotly·contested Dist. 37 Heavyweight Desert crown for the second consecutive year as chief rival Rich Thorwaldson stepped down from his year-long lead at the last minute. Thorwaldson, plagued _with flat tires during the year's final runs, a~cumulated a mere 65 points less than Martino's 2355 total. The top two riders each had 25 finishes with scoring based upon the best 20. The remainder of the Top 10 can be found on page 20. Sand caused throttle slides to stick on many machines competing in last month's start of the three race series to determine the Eastern Washington Hare Scrambles Championship at Pasco, Washington. One, Mike Burress (175 Kawasaki), seeking repairs to halt the problem, must have decidc:d it wasn't ~is day.
