If you are lucky enough to haife some sort of test box to check the timing with, it is easiest to reach under the gas tank and find the connector where the Mag, the coil and the kill button wire join. By disconnecting the coil wire, the terminal will drop down where the tester can be connected. Remember to reconnect the coil wire when you are finished or the machine will not start. 9.) For access to the carb and oil pump, remove th is cover wh ich is held in position by four screws (arrows). If these screws are hard to break loose, you should purchase an 'Impact Driver'. This will make it a simple chore and it is a too I th at you wi II use frequentl y as long as you own a motorcycle. If you should happen to butcher' up the screws getting them out, go to your dealer and pu rchase some new ones, the bad ones will be twice as hard to remove next time. 7.) If the timing is off, it must be set correctly for top performance. As the backing plate for the magneto is not able to rotate, the engine must be qrought into time by opening or closing the contact breaker gap. With the 'buzz-box' connected, adjust the point gap until the points open just as the lines are adjacent. Adjust the contacts by loosening the lock screw and levering them open or closed by inserting the screwdriver in the slot provided. If this brings the gap to less than .011 inches or more than .019 inches, the contacts will probably have to be replaced. 10.) Check mountin f1an~ throug, hole in front of engine (stoppered up with small rubber plug) and check position of Idle air screw as shown. This should be approximately tv, turns out from the bottom, run it all the way in and then back it out 1V, turns. Note the small round pip on the throttle 51 ide that is visible through the orifice of the carbo This mark is used for setting the oil pump to the correct oil feed. 8.) The clutch adjustment is carried out right behind the flywheel beneath the small rubber plug. After backing off all cable adjusters, remove this plug and loosen the lock nut. Back the nut off a few turns and with a small screwdriver, using very little pressure, turn the adjusting screw in until a slight resistance is felt, then back it off one-half turn and while holding the adjustor with the screwdriver to see that the adjustment doesn't change, tighten the lock nut. Make any further adjustments necessary on the cable adjustors. 11.) A close examination of the oil pump will find a small mark (R/H arrow) on the cable wheel of the pump on the rear side. This mark or pointer should line up with the small guide pin (UH arrow) that actuates the pump cam. This alignment should come when the top edge of the mark on the throttle slide just comes to the top of the venturi. Design«t for his personal use these popular accessories are now available in the United Stiltes. 12.) Install a new spark plug and start the engine. By turning the brass rod protruding from the top of the carb, the idle can be set. Before trying to adjust the idle, the machne should be allowed to warm up. Turning the adjuster clockwise will slow down the idle while counter-clockwise will increase the RPM. If everything has checked out to your satisfaction, you are ready to go.
