AMA National Num.bers For 1971 Season ~y tabling legislation ort the assIgnment of American - Motorcycle Association National rider numbers, the 1970 AMA Competition Congress returned to a procedure established previously by the AMA Executive Committee. Accordingly, for the 1971 National Championship season, the top professionals on the AMA motorcycle racing circuit will wear numbers based upon their points earned at the twenty·five National Championship races run during the 1970 season. Previo usl y a rider held a designated number for many seasons, regardless of his position in the points standing. Now an AMA professional's National Number will indicate his actual rank among those gaining National Championship points during the previous season. For the purpose of further rider identification, all National Number holders will wear their last names in block letters across the backs of their leathers, above the number. Below are the National Number designations for .1971. Number 13 is eliminated. The list ends at ninety-six because no further riders received National Championship points. 1. Gene Romero. BLM,~tudy Riding Areas The BLM's Riverside District Office, in the wake of San Bernardino County's recently passed ordinanc'e 0.1 off-road vehicle use, Ilas been deluged with requests for permission to use public lands for cycle riding and oilier off-road use according to Manager, Jack F. Wilson. The ordinance, requiring written permission from the landowner before the rider ventures onto private land, has virtually eliminated most of the favorite riding spots, especially for cyclists, Wilson said, and now the riders are looking to the public lands in the desert as a place to go. "We believe that off-road vehicle use is a legitimate use of public lands," Wilson said, Ubut this must be a managed use," he added, "if it's not to be destructive." In reponse to the problems of what to do for riders wanting to use public lands, the Riverside office has organized a group of private citizens representing various user and interest groups, and is presently studying ways and means of providing an area on public l~nds for off-road v.ehicle use with this group. The group, known as the High Desert Recreation Use Committee, is currently studying two area.s of the county which maybe suitable. The study areas were selected with the aid of data presented by BLM resource personnel in the form of maps and overlays showing various resources, conflicts, and ownership patterns. An on-the-ground examination by the committtee is planned soon. Membership of the 18-member committee ranges from motorcycle riders, dune buggy eniliusiasts and 4-whee1 drive fans to conservationists and wildlife biologists. The name and affiliation of the members are: K.K.
