But no matter how much preparation, either man or machine, a rno torcycle must be dependable and reliable.• This was quite apparent in the 250 Expert where the choice of the top 5 were all CZ. Mark Tripes heade;l the list by taking the overall win with two firsts and a second, three seconds behind Jim Cooke. In the first moto Tripes started dead last and mo ved past the entire field to take the win. Expert Pat DeBenedetti left them all behind on a newly acquired Penton (c/o Torsten H.) in the 125 Expert and Intermediate combo. Skip Porter (Bul) and Chuck Bouck on a super Carabella both made a bid against Pat but neither succeeded as lntermecIiates. Gary Harris (Hus) headed the 500 Expert slot. His old friend, Mark Blackwell (Hus), playfully followed for a while and then drove by. Less than a half lap later Blackwell's Husky seized and Harris unavoidably smonched him. N ow in the lead, Harris had a new YAMAHA ! problem - Pat DeBenedetti (Maico). Pat's clutch would not release, and as a consequence was fifth off the line. He wasted little time in catching up, and as Harris took the checker he was only a mere four feet behind. The second moto found Pat out front with Gary waiting for a hole. It appeared and he immediately occupied it to take over the lead. On and on they went, faster and faster until Harris made a mistake and DeBenedetti slipped by to take the win. Third place Jim Heath was 34 seconds behind. The third moto was a repeat of the second with Pat leading till half-a-lap from the end where he (tired from five prior motos and an ailing clutch) finally fell to Harris. This gave Gary two fll'sts and a second to Pat's two seconds and a first and a 100 point win. Jim McDonald (Kaw) handily won all three 100 Jr. motos. D. Buzza settled into two easy seconds and a second overall. Three Divisions of 250 and 125 Jrs., Experts and Intermediates, included 230 ride.rs and all enjoyed a beautiful day with a little mud on the side - all excellent ingredients for motocross.
