McElrath jumped into the early lead, while rival Sexton crashed and was buried in the pack, but Sexton caught a huge break when the race was red-flagged due to a downed rider, Garrett Marchbanks, who needed assistance getting off the track (it was later revealed that he suffered a bruised lung). McElrath again got into the early lead on the re-start but Sexton was right behind him and riding well. Sexton pushed McElrath into making a mistake when the Yamaha ran into a lapped rider and went down. Sexton cruised to victory well ahead of McElrath. Nichols finished third. "It was a bummer to get the red flag... we were in the perfect position," said McElrath. "I had to win," said Sexton, who rode much of the main event without the use of his front brake, which had been damaged during the race. "No second place tonight." CN
