APPLE VALLEY, CALIF .. Dec. 6,
1970 - Recent rains soaked into the
~ ground an.d made for excellent racing at
z Deadmans Point. It never was dusty.
~ Everyone seemed to enjoy the track,
u although it was almost dark when the
t; races were over.
Craig Lee did some fast riding on his
Yamaha Van Tech to pick up the win in
the 100 Senior class with the Wilsford
family coming in on their Hodakas for
second and third. Frank Wilsford Sr.
tangled with Terry Clark of desert fame
in one moto but went on to capture
th ird overall.
In the 100 Intermediate race, John
Burr got his Honda going fast enough to
take first and keep it.
The 125 Senior win went to Jim
Hoover on his Sachs after Clark had
bike problems in the first moto while
holding a commanding lead.
Chuck Wagner brought out a new
Puch and picked up first place in the
125 Intermediate class.
There were only two 500 Seniors so
the 250 & 500 Senior was combined
and
also
included
the
250
Intermediates. Not to detract from
anybody else's riding abilities, but this
class saw some of the most fantastic and
fiercest competition of the day.
Ron
Nelson
came
out
of
semi-retirement and showed up on a
prototype 50 Icc Maico with disc
brakes. AJI the spectators watched in
awe as he made a Iliant sweeper out of
the tum on to the back straigh t. Ron
had the right peg on the ground, as he
did full lock power slides at phenomenal
speeds. It was really something to
watch.
Brake problems put him out after the
second moto and Don Bevans, who was
right with him ost of the time, went on
for the 500 win on his Husky.
The 250 Senior win went to Jim
Hoover on his CZ with Rex Staten right
behind for second aboard his Ossa.
The 250 Intermediate class went to
Jim Macdonald aboard his CZ with
Chuck Bybee bringing in his Maico for a
weJl earned second place.
Promo ter Bob Dresslar will be
starting a membership program at the
point in 1971. Watch Cycle ews for
further details. Also after Jan. I, 1971,
race entry will go up from $1 to $2, but
it's stiJl the best deal in town.
The next race will be December 20.
See you then.

Cycle News To Test
Expansion Chambers
Expansion chambers, about which
there is much myth and superstition, are
to be the subject of a fairly scientific
study to be conducted by feature writer
Ron Schneiders.
Quite a few formulas have been
devised over the years to aid in the
design of expansion chambers. Some of
these have been published. Cycle News
is going to build expansion chambers to
these published formulas for each of
two motorcycles and test them on a
precision dynomometer. The results will
be a good indication of the historical
development of expansion .chamber
design. At the same time, manufacturers
will be asked to build expansion
chambers for the same two motorcycles.
These will be tested righ t alongside the
historical designs. A complete report
will be forthcoming shortly after New
Yean.
The historical designs will include,
among others, the designs of Dr.
Gordon Blair, eminent British scientist
and of Gorden Jennings, racer and
journalist. The pipes wiJl built precisely
to sp<:cification by K & G Engineering,
who intend to submit their own design
as weIl. Pipes will be built for a stock
125 Sachs Motocross and slightly
modified 250 Yamaha DTl-B which has
been lent to Cycle News for this test by
a W.qrld
Cycle
in
Hollywood.
Modification of the Yamaha will be
done Barry Eisenburg, who has tuned
many of the fastest bikes in Southern
California. Testing will be done on the
,best dynomometer in the U.S. which is
the dyno of C.R. Axtell in Glendale.
