The race promised to be a great one right from the start as Morgan held the points lead with 35 points, 9 points over second placeman Dave Hansen. The Championship could only go to Hansen if he won the main event and Morgan didn't make the main at all. If this didn't come about, the Championship was all Morgan's. Tension and pressure started to mount soon after the fifth qualifying heat when Morgan's' motor stopped temporarily, putting him out of the races for the night. But there was still a chance for Morgan - what if Hansen didn't win the main event? Then the Championship would still go to Morgan. To add to the pressure, Dave Hansen did a great job of winning his qualifying heat and getting fast time of the night. Next came the heat races. Dave Hansen won the first and fastest heat with Butch. Corder secon_d and Dick Lewis third. Novice Steve Foster took the second heat followed closely by Russ Ponen and Joe Soto. Another Novice, Bruce Brown, won the third heat with Bob Scally and Allen Kenyon trying Lleir hardest to pass Brown, but settled for second and third when the race was called on the fifth lap. Novices were I, 2 and 3 in·the fourth heat - Randy Bailey, Len Halton and Les Costanza. Between the heats and semis the racers too.k a break and the youngest generation brought out their mini-bikes. After a very close main event, little Bob Balga, who won just inches ahead of Harold Kunsman, collected his brass and received an enthusiastic ovation from the spectators. Next in line was the first semi. Dave Hansen took another first as he went on to win just split seconds ahead of Allen Kenyon and Butch Corder.
