Seventh was Gene Smith on a Triumph, copping the first ·open class trophy, and 13th place Jennoe Razika, on a Yamaha, seemed to explode when only '4 mile from the fmish. His rear tire, which had gone flat some miles back, suddenly disintegrated and snapped_his chain. With a little help from his friends, Razika carried the bike to the finish line to win the first Amateur honors. Whew! How does it feel to win the world's biggest motorcycle race the 3rd year in a tow? J.N. found it a good deal rougher than last year. Other than that, it was all in a day's work for the movie daredevil and DIS perfectly tuned Husky from Tracy's in Burbank, Calif. By "rough," J.N. was partly referring to a washout YAMAHA! fONTANA following a road crossing on the last section that drew blood from several who hit it too hot, including Thorwaldson. As near as we can tell, the first Novice, finishing a remarkable 28th overall, after a 20·minute delayed start, was a young man named Rocky White, riding, of all things, a Honda. That's what J.N. started on, so keep an eye on this lad. Out of the 2,000 starters, only 548 fmished, and there is a tale to be told for each one who started. One guy took his dog along for the ride, but the pOOr animal crashed. We lost count of the finishers who rode in on flat tires. As night fell, bringing rain, there were more than a few hapless competitors stranded in the desert with broken motorcycles. But that's racing, and they have all day Sunday to fetch them out.
