Because of the heavy rain there were no results available Sunday, according to the C.M.C. official there just wasn't a dry place to sit down and figure them. As usual the C.M.C. people kept things running as smooth as possible under the conditions, and believe me things were rough. Even after the racing was over there were numerous problems with cars and trucks that were stuck in the mud or that couldn't get traction to get up the hills. Nobody was left stranded, however, as everyone joined' together and helped each other out. There's one thing for sure, it will be a day most of us won't forget for quite a while. The $50,000.00 desert race is set for March 21-23, in the rugged .bush country north of Las Vegas. The scramble is between dune buggies, four-wheel-drive machines, utility vehicles, production cars and motorcycles. "Last year's record Dumber of entries - 298 cars and 79 motorcycles should easily be topped this year," said race director, Mel Larson. ''The greatest increas~ is expected in the two-wheel division." He commented that an added bonus for the 250cc-and-under machines puts the motorcycle guaranteed purse at the largest motorcycle payoff in the United States. The $1 ,5 70.00 bonus to small bike riders pushes the guaranteed motorcycle purse to $13,870.00. This year, in addition to the excitement 0 f rugged 400-mile race, additional activity will add to the glamour of the race. Special press parties, a beauty contest, a mile-long parade through downtown Las Vegas and a spectator gallery that may include some of the top names in Las Vegas "strip" entertainment are all part of the event. Another attraction of the '71 "Mint '400'" is the very definite possibility of a 200-station television network airing of the race.
