Buck ~ i o ... on lL By Patrice Kenyon SAN JOSE, CALIF., Nov. 21, 1970 For the first time in its four-week run, the San Jose Short Track has a two time winner. Wheeler Gresham almost made it a clean sweep as he went on to win the 15-lap main event for the second week in a TOW. In the early laps of the main event it was point leader Bill Morgan who put the pressure on Wheeler. Morgan, who has a great talent for passing on this tight track, just couldn't seem to get by Wheeler. He soon relinquished second to Daye Hansen who kept up the pressure on Wheeler till the checkered flag. Nich Theroux brought up a distant fourth behind Morgan with joe Henry fifth. The consolation race looked like a game of dominoes as riders went off everywhere. Despite all of the fallen riders and machines on the track, Sam Mangalin went on to win with a fast time of· 1.23.33. Bob Goodman also avoided the traffic as he finished a close second. Hansen managed to put a gap in Gresham's winning streak as he rode to victory in the three-lap trophy dash. The next fastest heat of the night went to Gresham; John Emerson was second. Henry had no problem winning his heat over Theroux while Hansen won out over Bob Scally in the fourth and final heat race. Three favorites Mark Brelsford, Butch Corder and Allen Kenyon were put out of the running' early as each went down in their heat races. The only kind of streak these three are running into is one of bad luck. And so goes the unpredictable San Jose races. (Results on page 20) Sacto 51 By Larry Montgomery SACRAMENTO, CALIF., Nov. 22, 1970 - The racing was stiff and tight at today's Sportsman Short Track sponsored by the Sacramento Two Wheelers M.C. In the 100cc Novice Main, jack Arnold jumped his Suzuki into the lead for seven laps, but dropped back to third allowing George Spring, also on a Suzuki, to capture the lead and eventually the win. Steve deVault (Kaw) took second. David Haughs held his lead position until three laps from the end during the 200 Novice Main and relinquished the spot to fellow Bultaco rider Don Bonacci. Haughs dropped to third behind Greg Ferguson (Kaw) , but presently passed him to take second at the flaR. The real crowd-pleasers, however, were the 250 Novice and Amateur Mains. Jan Holderman held the lead much of the first half of the race, but he was beu:,g dogged by Corky Swadle1;' Midway through, Swadley fo~d hIS opening and short past only to shde out instantly afterward and dropped back to fourth. Holderman (BuI) held for the win but Swadley moved up to take third behind Tim Tewksbury. It appeared to be Mike Rooney (Yam) the victor of the 250 ~mateur Main but he suddenly turned mto the victim as Charley McGimsey (BuI) had his nip-and-tuck efforts pay· off by snatching the lead in the last comer and barely held on for the checkered. . Jim Crenshaw took over the lead m the 250cc Expert.Main after four laps and pushed his Bultac,:, hard to easIly win ahead of Bill Catlcura and Mike O'Brien.
