PHOENIX, ARIZ., Nov. 15, 1970 The Phoenix Inter-Am race here today had all the makings of a Cinderella story, but at the end of the last event it still hadn't turned into the expected pumpkin. One week before the race, promoter Dave Grove from Bay Mare picked up the Phoenix race date from Edison Dye - Inter-Am czar who decided he didn't like the cactus league. Grove got to Phoenix and began looking for a course location. He found it - three days before the race. To add to the troubles of the race the American Hot Rod Association was holding the World Point Championships in the Valley, on the same date...and local press acted as if the European chapter of the Hell's Angles was ready to storm in to town. But, with all the chips appearing to be down, nearly 5,000 spectators turned out in the breezy, 70-degree weather to get Arizona's first look at European motocross stars in action. In the first 500 International event, Ake Jonsson jumped to the lead on the 1.1-mile course to the embarrassment of world-champion Bengt Aberg who boggled at the nag and was eased back to fourth place. Willie Bauer of Germany on a Maico held second place till lap four, when Aberg on his Husky slid by to try for Jonsson's position. Jonsson held off Aberg and the champion got caught in traffic.
