Timing The Honda '180
If you have ever had occasion to set
the ignition timing on a 160 Honda
using a timing ligh t, you have found
that it can get pretty messy. Due to the
design of the engine, if th,e alternator
cover is removed while the engine is
running, a shower of oil is given to
everything in the near vicinity.
Since a timing check should always
be done with a timing light trained on
the marks stamped on the rotor, this
makes it a little rough. By purchasing a
spare
cover which sells across the
for about $2.00, a simple tool
can be made up which eliminates the oil
bath but allows the timing and advance
to be checked.
Simply drill a large hole in the cover
directly over the stationary timing
pointer, remove the stock cover and
secure this one with the bottom screw
and it is ready to go. If you want to be
super-neat, you can glue a piece of
plexi-glass over the inside and have a
window to time' the engine through.
