'" N l o .... '" ..... ~ W Z W ..J U > U EMDE RIGHT ON AT ROAD RACE By Marty McGillivray CARLSBAD, CALIF., November 8, 1970 - It was a day designed for racing, and the racers obliged. On the date of the last road race before the big international at Orange County, Don Emde showed he will be one of the top contenders. Today, most of the stars were out getting in one last session of racing, but Emde ran away and hid from the pack in both the 250 and Open G.f. events. In the 350, 500, and Open G.P. he was not only the pacesetter, but he ran the fastest lap ever recorded at Carlsbad. He clipped .2 seconds off the record held by Cal Rayborn, turning a 1:06.0 lap, remarking later that he could have made his 350 Yamaha go even faster. Most of the regular winners were at the race, John McGillivray being about the only one missing. And for the most part they won. Jack Simmons led the "Norton Gang" to a 1-2ยท3 win in the Heavyweight Production event. This race saw the return of George Kerker to the scene after missing several races due to a s'everely fractured hand. It was this fact which possibly kept him from winning the Heavyweight event. At one point he took the lead, only to have his weakened hand give out on him, as he fmished a very close third. In that race Jack Simmons, Bill Manley, and Kerker all had the lead at one point. Simmons, the eventual winner, went off into the bushes once, showering the other two with debris, but did not surrender the lead. Next to the production event, the most exciting race was the Open Jr. G.P. OT OF C-Z INSIDE AMERICAN JAWA Race proven on the international speedway track. Truely a champion with 58 hp at 8,000 rpm. Dry weight only 182 lb. The SOOCC DT Speedway is only one of fhe 13 models from the Jawa/CZ line.
