M N Injuries Plague Debut Of Winter Scrambles By N.A. Williams A pair of fallen bikes block Gary Kapus (7) but he still went on to win two trophy dashes and two A Mains. WOODLAND, WASH., Nov. I, 1970 A total of 210 riders turned out on this sunny . Sunday for the first winter scrambles. The new covered grandstand was filled with people. The track was rough because it has been too dry and the track is at its best when it is a little wet. The races were hard and fast with a lot of ...iders going down during the day. Only two of these were injured enough to need assistance from the ambulance attendants. Vince Figone got a broken leg in the 100cc heat race when he went off his Honda at the start of the day. The other injury was also in the 100cc class. Ron Bell went over the high side of his Suzuki and had a slight concussion and a sprained ankle. Do to the large number of riders and the shortness of time (because it gets dark so early) there were no semis and the riders were allowed to forfeit their trophies and move up to the next main event, as many times as they could fmish in first place. The races will start a little early from now on. Practice will be at 11 :30 and the race between 12:30 and 1:00. The next race at Woodland is Nov. 15, 1970. They race every other week. The Bob Barkhimer' Associates Production went off very smoothly or as smoothly as could be considering that this show is nearly a riot every year. The 1/10th mile circle is extremely close and the grandstands are right up near the fence so that the spectators can nearly participate in the event. If a rider shows himself well in one part or another, he is acclaimed by the assembled. If he shows bad taste he will be booed and hissed out the gate and sometimes even have projectiles sent his way. Tonight's show was a calm as the fans grew to know the riders. National Number 87, Mark Brelsford, was back from the championship trail and ready to defend his title. Butch Corder was ready to do battle and looking toward the indoor title. National Number 23, Dave Bostrom, returned to the County Fairground asphalt after a two year tour with the Army and was very impressive despite a first lap shunt. The 1968·69 champion, Mike Yam, came back astride Dick Steinke's Bultaco and gave a good showing for himself. His addition to the Sonny Kenyon stables makes for a very impressive team. The 88 assembled class 'c' riders rode II qualifying heats to transfer to four heat races, two semis and a main. Brelsford turned the fastest heat time after having difficulty getting to th e front. Mark stiJI has a collarbone problem from last year which must be dealt with but it doesn't appear to have much effect on the seventh ranked rider. Dave Hansen had no problem winning his heat over Ron Wisler. Bill Morgan and Mike Yarn dueled for the win in heat two with Morgan taking the checkered and Al Kenyon won the the third despite accidents and restarts. Scally puts on a show all by himself at these races with unbelievable slides and dances. He hit the rear wheel of a bike while in second place and should have crashed but managed only to have the bike come out from under him. He kept it going and got back on while only losing one spot. There was no time on this semi as Nick Theroux bailed right at the finish line and. brought out the black flag. The second semi turned out to be a thriller with Brelsford taking the jump. Bill Morgan stayed very close for the first three laps and then really poured it on. He got by Brelsford and led the pack to the checkered and brought the house down with his upset over Mark. The 15-lap main had Brelsford, Morgan, Kenyon and Hansen for. the front four but it was all Al Kenyon when the flag went up. Morgan held on for second and was within striking distance for the frrst laps but Kenyon just kept up a good steady pace and won his first professional main event. This is quite a change for the luckless BSA-Bultaco Amateur who set records along the national trail. Maybe his luck has finally started to go the other way. In the Consolation· event Gene McFarland kept H-D's good name in front of Jim Moyles' Yam and Eldon Hinkles' Bul for to taps and the checkered. Young SACRAMENTO, CALIF., November I, 1970 - Approximately 130 riders showed up on this fine day to compete on an all new race course that had been laid out among the trees. The weather was not hot and proved to be excellent for racing. Only two motos were run, 15 min. each, but this seemed to give every rider plenty of riding time. The frrst moto group out was the 1st Division of 125 Novices. Rick Clement of Fairoaks finished frrst in the first mo to and second in the other but not without a real battle with Paul Orlandi who came in second overall. Rick was first. The 125cc Novice Division II was a real race in each moto. In the 1st moto Gary Davis led all until about 5 ft. before the flag when Jeff Younger powered through to gain No. I position. Carl Cranke of Cycle Speed Research & Development Inc. ran away from the pack in each moto. Next came Eddie Brown on a powerful little Honda, then Tom Madlem, first Amateur across the line. Howard Hendry won the 250 Novice Division I, Ron Womack collected second, and Mike McQueen, third. Maico rider Eric Nelson won both motos in the 250cc Novice Division 11. Fred Manning collected enough points to end up second at the day's end. Dave Lonceor on his old favorite AJS from Cycle Speed flew over the course in each moto and won both. He was followed in each moto by Jim Miller and George Newhart. These two competitors fought hard to catch Dave, but were unable to do so. Carl Cranke won the 250 Expert race going away with Ron Miller getting I second. Hard riding Stan Stanton from Nevada City, Calif. picked up third. The Open Novice class was the largest class of the day. There was quite a scramble for positions in each moto. Doug Manning-won at last and Gary Ceo on his C·Z raced into second. Loose riding Pat Smithson on his big Husky rode a very consistent race to gather up third in this big class. In the Expert Open class, Eddie Brown, riding for Lakeside Honda, put everything he had into the race and really flew on the big 350 Honda. The roar of this monster was quite strange to hear with all the other two cycles singing all the time. Eddie won each moto and Bill Verbisco from Cycle Town in·San Rafael picked up second on his CZ. Everybody had a very pleasant day of racing and all are looking forward to Cal-Am's next event.
