Birthday Celebration CARSON CITY, NEV., Oct. 25, 1970 The Carson City Desert Hawks kicked off Nevada's birthday celebration week with an lOX citing motocross staged at Accidents Hinder Springer Benefit By James E. Brammer VALLEJQ,. CALIF., Oct. 25, 1970 The sportsman IT scrambles, sponsored by the Hi·Hats Motorcycle Club and. backed by many local motorcycle dealers who contnbuted more than $650 for trophies and then merchandise awards, was a benefit race with proceeds to help with the medical expenses for Ben Springer. Springer, in attendance but restricted to a wheel chair, suffered a broken neck on the starting line in an accident Aug. 9. The program ran into the night with the final event, an Australian punuit race, being cancelled by an accident that left rider Toby Taldot from Richmond with a possible broken arm, another youth was taken to a hospital under shock. The youth wh'o had been helping the Hi-Hats on the infield attempted to cross the track right after the final race had started. Coming out of the north tum Taldot ran into the youth at high speed. Taldot walked from the track after a temporary splint had heen placed on his arm. Harry Dring and John Gennai provided the excitement in the 250cc Expert class with Gennai unable to pass winner Dring although he attempted throughout the final three laps. Keith Van Delinder took the 500cc final froni Gary Estes on the finish line with Estes sliding off the groove after the line, taking a long, sliding fall that ended against the wall in the south corner. Two 350cc Harley·Davidson riders switched back and forth during the 360cc Amateur final with Max Hall winning over Eric Bengtsson. Ken Helling from Martinez on a 650cc Triumph won a combined 500cc-650cc Expert class leading from lap one with Jim Saitone from Petaluma holding second. their river-side desert track under perfect conditions. The AMA sanctioned event came off without a hitch due to the tireless efforts of Promoter-Referee Ron Clark and the members of the Desert Hawks club who had the track in perfect condition for the race. Lending additional professionalism to the well organized event, Starter Bob Clark was able to maintain a high pitch of excitement and a smooth efficiency throughout the three motos. All proceeds from the event, sponsored jointly by the Desert Hawks and The Canon City Sertoma Club were donated to the Ormsby County Association for Retarded Children. Highlighting the day's activities, which saw more than 100 riden from Nevada and Northern California gather in spirited competition, was the performance put on by 17-year-old Gary Ceragioli of Canon City who barely edged Martin Devin of Roseville. Calif., out of first place in the Open Amateur-Expert Division. Ceragioli flashed past the checkered flag in the fJrSt moto when he overtook Devirs who crashed near the end of the frrst heat on a tight tum and took a fourth. Devirs came back to pace the second and third motos by fmishing first in both. However, Martin's efforts were not quite enough to beat out young Ceragioli who finished second in the final two motos cinching an overall frrst with his 360 Bultaco. Excellence of performance was the order of the day as Gabe Dick, of Bishop, Calif., proved that he came to ride as he powered his CZ in the 250 Novice Division to fint place in all three motos. Other riders taking home frrst place hrass were: Steve Thomsson (Hus) of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., in the 250 Amateur·Expert Division; R. Byron Frenyea (CZ), also of Mammoth Lakes, took the Open Novice Division (CZ); Michael Ford (P.c;n), South Lake Tahoe, took the 125 Novice Division and Rich MacMurray (Hon) traveled in from Reno to take the 100 Novice trophy. Competitors and spectaton alike had nothing but praise and compliments for the Desert Hawks on their smooth presentation of the well organized event. (Results on page 32) Coming out of the first two turns in 250cc Senior competition it is Dave Clift (23) and Jim Pomeroy (201 in the lead. Clift finished second overall while Pomeroy dropped to seventh. Seafair City Ends MX Fling By Kevin Hill ORTlNG, WASH., Oct. 25,1970 - The final 'act of the Seafair City M/C's "Summer's End Series" was played today under ideal conditions for riders and spectators alike. The previous week's rain left the coune in perfect condition but backed off long enough to permit a nice, dry and, at times, sunny day for the races. However, the crisp air left no doubt in anyone's mind that this was, indeed, the "Summer's Enc;t" Taking a decisive win in the 125 Sportsman class was Chuck Sinclair ahoard a brand new Zundapp-Metisse that really screamed. Close behind was Brian Barthrop on a Bultaco in the unaccustomed position of second place. Chuck had to put on a fme come from behind charge to pull off the win over Brian, who took an early read in the last moto and threatened to win it all before that superfast Metisse powered by. However, Brian still came away with a giant trophy for being high point man in this class for the four-race series. The 250 Sportsman class was dominltted once again by Dan Zlock who won, not only first overall for the N01RT1HI1ElRN )DlI1RIECT01RY RATES Sl<, PER YFAR S[1ISSUES FeR EACH SINGLE aUSI-'ESS LISTING PAYA,!3LE IN AO"ANLl ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA FREMONT. Don Axthelm, on a Suzuki, did a fine job of riding to earn second place over Jack Garthley and Tim Sullivan, both Yamaha mounted. This was the biggest class, as usual, with a total of 105 riders and it was no small feat to come out anywhere near the top of such a bunch of competiton. Bob Mutch was the top man in the Open Sportsman as he rode his Husky to a solid triumph over Dave Hopkins, who also appreciates that fine Swedish craftsmanship. Coming on strong all the way was Lloyd Hashbarger, on yet another Husky, who could only manage a fifth for the day but still wound up in fJrSt place for the series trophy. Rick Poulin, with a rapid Sachs, walked off with top money in the Senior 125 but not without an argument from Dave Clift, also Sachs mounted, who nipped his heels "lost of the way. Maybe Dave lost the edge from riding aD three classes while Ricky "only" rode two. Buck Murphy was hanging in there and, except for one high speed endo, might have done better than third on his shiny new Zundapp-Metisse. A total of $180 was up for grabs as the 250 Senior class roared off the line and put on some of the 'toughest and closest racing of the day. Almost everyone had a chance to lead> this one at some time or another. Poulin got. into some terrific duels with his friend and neighbor Jim Pomeroy, both from Eastern Washington. Both of these aces had bad luck, however, as Ricky crashed heavily on the main straight when he was blocked by a rider he was lapping (he was leading at the time), and Pomeroy had a series of spinouts, stalled engines, etc. Providing that his win at Puyallup last week was no fluke, Gordy Ocbs put on a steady charge that earned him top honon in this class for the day and very close to high point leader for the series. H e was edged out f or that aw;u-d by Clift, who did some fme catch.up riding to take second for the day ahead of Mike Weiland. Mike had the lead at one point, as did so many others in this close competition, but dropped his Maico somewhere along the way and slipped to third behind the two Bultaco il pots• Only 13 "thunder-bikes" showed up to do battle in the Open Senior class but they put on a mighty fine show. Bill Bevaart was out of action with an.injury . and was unable to continue his rivalry with Jim Einarsson who won it all again.
