('I~ ... .. ... .. ... ... N 0 By Gary Schmythe HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA., Nov. 1, 1970 - AU the chips were on the table today with the running of the fmal Moto-X of the regular year, as many of the top ten point standings were still in question. The 100 Novice -found Mike Hayes (Hod) doing battle with Jerry Hill (Rick). It was nip-n·tuck all the way, with the lead changing on every lap, Hayes got in front with two laps to go and went on to take the checkered flag in a hard fought battle. In the combined 100 & 125 Expert class, D. McLeish (Yam) grabbed a slight lead over L. Quintard (Yam), with Gary Martini back in third. At times the front runners were peg to peg and jump to jump, but it was McLeish who made it over the finish line fust. The 125 Novice had to be a real heartbraker for R. Lopez (Rick), who earlier in the .day had gone ahead to take two wins. Lopez got off the line in a good third spot, by lap four he had moved up to the number two slot only to have the front tire go flat on him, Bob Hansen (Yam) took over the lead with number three position going to Jeff Koble (Pen). The combined 250 Novice and Expert, (trophied separately) found D. Miles (Mai) out in front of Tom Gross (C-Z) and R. Remelin in third, in another closely fought Qattle. Top honors of the 250 Expert went to Greg Wickam (BuI), with D. Hocke (Ossa) a bike's length behind and finishing for a well earned third spot was Craig Cove (Yam). Coming out of retirement was three time National Champ, (59, 60, and 61) Jim Goldsmith on a Triumph-Metisse taking his first crack at Moto-X, and still good enough to walk off with the number one spot. Mike Stoner (Husky) was second and Ron Clawson (Husky) was third. Come Dec. 1, 1970 we will start a new year, with new points to be earned, and there is no doubt that there will be many new riders on hand, so let's say a word of thanks to the starters, timers, flagmen and all for a job well done.
