M' ,; o Z ~ Huge'Turnout gfor Wash. MX Stuns Hustlers By James W. Shipley GARBERVILLE, CALIF., Oct. 11, 1970 - The Humboldt Hustlers, in their first of many motocross races planned this season, had anticipated a high of about 50 riders. Needless to say, they were shocked to find 134 ride~s signed up for th'e race with a paid attendance coming to 1655. Some of the clubs represented were the Dirt Diggers from Southern California, the Road Runners from Fort Bragg and Far West Motorcycle Club from Eureka. Of course, there were many non-club riders, too. They came from as far south as Los Angeles and north as Oregon and one rider from Holland. Due to the unexpected number of riders each event had to be cut to two races instead of the usual three. Considered one of the best enduro riders in the state, Eureka's Brian Lee, who rode for the North and South team this year and received a fourth overall down south, rode to an easy first in the 125cc event and a hard second in the 250cc. Greg Hubbs was the man who won over Brian Lee in the 250cc. Hubbs from Nevada City, Nevada won all of the six races he was in. Though entitled to three trophies he accepted only the one for the 250cc class as he felt there was not enough competition in the 125cc or the 360cc. He asked that those trophies be passed down to the second place man. Jack Harter (11) and Kurt McKinny (75x) lead the diverse efforts through this switch-back. Eddie Brown, who has just turned A rider, really showed why in the first 360cc class. Honda mounted, right off the showroom floor, he got up and went right through the pack of Bultacos, Huskies and Greeves. He was so ~r ahead that he was popping wheelies coming down the front straightaway. 'llEIEICA.lE' . from U,S,A. West C'laS! Distributors The track was rather long and narrow and dusty. There were 12 bike starts with a very narrow switch-back about 70 feet down the straight. Usually the first man into this corner was the winner as there was hardly any passing room. The Hustlers have promised that tbe track would be much wider by the next race. They will probably use both the motorcycle and dune buggy tracks as it will be strictly a bike race. The added track should make it several miles long. It was generally felt that the Humboldt Hustlers did a good jdb c,onsidering the large number of unexpected riders and that this was the first time they even presented a race. The track is located eight miles south of Garberville on Highway 101 above the river, and is well posted. Tbe next race is set for October 25th. (Results on page 22) 2631 N. MAlN,WALNUT CR..
