!ll By Maureen Lee Now we'll start into our wrap-up of our previous c.olumns about sportsmen wno ride for money and those who ~ receive discounts etc. on bikes and C'J parts, and fry to explain what prompted M" these scribblings. ~ The sport of "sportsman" z competition ridinR is very dear to our Rain Cannot Stop Texas '" ! hearts and we feel that it is starting to suffer because the money aspect has come into it. As we've said twice before, we are never against anyone making a buck. If an owner, shop, distribut.or or whoever feels you're good enough to make something out of it, you've earned the right. But, we're thinking of the guy who isn't so good but wants that lower plate number just as badly as you do but has to pay for everything himself, or, if he's lucky, gets a small break on parts. He's riding his heart out alongside a guy who is doing just the same thing but on machinery as finely prepared as any professional and he didn't have to pay for the tuning himself; not only that, at the end of the day there's a nice little check coming should he win or do well. Not only isn't it fair but the mental attitude of the two riders if different. Once you have raced for money your head no longer works the same way as the guy who is in the thing just for the jollies of it. Some moons back we were involved in a big hassle (were we ever!) in a thing with the AMA about letting the Class C Experts and Amateurs ride scrambles. At that time we felt it highly unfair because as soon as they were prevented from riding, the scrambles started going downhill. There were some jolly old arguments on that question including one with a guy still the greatest all-around racer this country has produced and one of his points, amongst many others that have no bearing on this story, was that the difference in equipment wasn't fair. At that time I thought all kinds of nasty thought to myself and argued back. Well, that little part of that discussion is now real but in a different way. People are riding machinery as By Dodie Stingley slow in getting the show on the road that the big bikes just got sick of getting shat:ted every week and stayed home or went to ride non-district club events. But, at the same time, a lot· of the guys out in front were well-sponsored. Why even try to compete with them when you couldn't out-horsepower them anyway? The day turned into a complete drag and you could have a hell of a lot more Iun just going out to the boonies and going skidding. And that's just what a lot of them did. As a parallel, I think some of you know that I'm a retired car racer (well almost retired until I get a Porsche alongside) and my husband and I campaigned a stock sports care for a few· years. At ftrst, it was a complete and utter ball. People had MG's and Alfas and things like that and we had a blast. It was what was referred to in them 'good ole days' as the gentleman drivers class. Then up came the money bit. The year we tossed in the towel the guy who won the championship in the class we drove in spent $10,000 for that number one. He earned it, too, but how could just average working people like us even come close to affording to put that' much money into an engine let alone the other hundreds of drivers in the same boat. Now the sports car races are for the very rich. They literally murdered out the "average guy" who paid his own bills or got a little discount and I don't want to see it happen to sporing motorcycle riding. Let the guys get all the help they can, but once it reaches a certain point, pop them into their own class such as the one we suggested last week. Super-Expert. Let's have some thoughts on this, troops. If you're just one of the common herd get in there and bitch back. ARLINGTON, TEX., Oct. II, 1970 It was in the middle of the hardest rain seen here in a long time. Instead of a pOol'" turnout the hillside was covered with cars and bikes still on their trailers. Not a soul was stirring. Everyone was inside their cars, campers or under their tent shelter waiting to see if the downpour was going to let up any. An hour went by and the rain only seemed to worsen and the thunder was more constant. Just about the time it was decided no one was going to do anything, a motorcycle started up and splashed its way to the starting line. In a couple of minutes the line was almost filled and there they sat ready to go. The rain was still coming down so hard it led some to wonder how the riders could even see the track, to say nothing of how they would manage to stay upright. But, they were off. Four riders fmished the frrst heat in the-I25 Jr. class with Michael Sauce on a 125 Yamaha coming in ftrst. In the second moto Jack Kirby, on a 125 Suzuki, prevailed as did Phillip Fairweather (Sac) in the third. Overall first place trophy in the 125 Jr. going to Jack Kirby. In the 125 Sr. class Ole Finstad (Pen) held the lead to the middle of the last lap where a spill just before the finish let Foy Brewer (Pen) slip by to finish first. Ole took second. Brewer came in third in the second moto but moved back to flTSt in the third netting him an overall first in prize money with Ole getting a second. The big money winner of the day was a 15-year·old from Irving, Texas, Rocky Timmons, doing some beautiful riding in two classes. He came in frrst every heat in the 250 class on his CZ, with second place going to David Hickman on a Bultaco. Van Elarn Jr. took his Suzuki racing and came in flTSt in the 250 Jr. with Robert D'entremont (Yam) getting a second. In the Open class Timmons again came in first everytirne on his CZ. This boy put on quite a show. The rain didn't slow him up a bit. Second place went to Tom Eller (Yam) and third to Joe Rachel (Mai). Texas Moto-X Challanges All DALLAS, TEXAS, Oct. I, 1970 Gone are the days of six guns and lariats; replaced by the six pack (spectators and seniors only) and tool kit! Motocross has hit Texas and as usual, Texas is striking back! Two years have gone by since a few hardy souls dared to promote and run motocross in a country where short track, flat track and road races were as sacred as motherhood and oil wells. These years have produced startling changes: tracks started up, drew a few riders and fewer spectators; scheduled races on the same days; kept no race-to·race point records - and some went broke. Meantime though, some top riders were developing - Wyman Priddy, Billy Boyd, Al Locke, Mike Johnson, Phil and Ken Snipes, Anthony J ones, Mike Kidd and Ennis Elliot to name a few. A few dealers started s p 0 n soring senior riders and, occasionally, a junior rider. At long last, some order is emerging. Ross Downs (Saturday nights - under the lights), Azle Crowley, Lake Worth, Green Valley, Arlington and Shreveport (La.) courses have joined forces in scheduling dates and keeping cumulative point scores so that riders' standings can have some sort of legitimacy and spectators will have a chance to know what is going on - where and when. Soon, Texas will know who are the best junior and senior riders and then fmd out if California wants to race the best of theirs against the best of ours (offer is open to other states also!).
