A(A Nol Exempl From By Maureen Lee IRVINE, CALIF., Oct. 25,1970 - WeU, you could say it was one of those days when things in general coUapsed, I won't make my excuses public but the ACA had their problems, too. Their problems are too many to put in print but as just one example as to what went wrong with their day, for the first time of covering many of their races for years the results weren't top notch by the end of the day. So, to any of your riders who read your name mis-speUed or in the wrong order of finishing position, our apologies! One thing we've noticed lately amongst the motocross group that it's the in thing to try and out do the other guy with helmet decorations and some of them Sunday were out of sight! We had everything from balloons, scarves, streamers, a beer can, rubber toys to an American flag (which is one place it doesn't belong) decorating helmets. Two who would have won the prizes if there'd been any were Larry Lee with bobble' fringe and Randy Burok with hair and a set of teeth glued to the bottom of his BeU Star. Talk about HaUoween. Because of the size of the entries for the 125 's and the 250 Juniors these guys got to ride three times causing some unhappiness amongst the Seniors who only go two motos. Frank Rowe on an extremely fast Ossa was the 250 Junior winner in the final and it was obvious in the qualifying heats that he was the guy to beat although Greg Wickam (BuI) gave him a real good go but Greg ended up with a fourth place overall. In the final Bob Merrick had the second spot for a while but Steve Schutte moved up fast and finally nailed him, both riders on C-Zs. It was the day of the Bultaco in the 125 class, and the Juniors did a darn ax Scoring good job against the Seniors. Ross Maeda took the lead with Mark Rick right on his heels. As the race developed at times these two were absolutely side by side and on the Saddleback groove that islT't easy unless you're real good and have faith in the guy alongside you and the bike you're riding, and these two obviously did. The 250 Senior winner was John Maroney (C-Z) with Bob Bailey on a Maico taking second. In the second round Bailey was so close to Maroney that from where we were standing you couldn't tell who was first past the flag, it was just a wheel's difference.' Tliey lumped the 500 juniors and Seniors together because there weren't too many Seniors but some of those Juniors went so fast that some observers wondered why they were listed as Juniors. Carl Cotton was the overaU winner but Junior Mike Brown, also on a C-Z, was righ t in there the whole time. Randy Knerr on a Montesa was going Problems very fast in the second round and we have him in our no1..es as around fourth but the overall results show him to be around thirteenth, so something must have gone wrong somewhere. Anyway, as we said before, it was one of those days. One poor guy turned up to ride the 500 class and they didn't wan t to let him onto the line because his number wasn't on the list (it turned up on the 250 list later) in the results he's listed as Bryan Wade when he looked more like John Banks. The officials didn't catch one little cat who was sneaking down the sandwash and then out onto the track for extra laps. He had them conned into the fact it was two guys on the same bike but with a Bell Star on it's hard to tell who it is. We happened to be in the right place at the right time and saw it. There was even a trail rider who popped out of nowhere and rode two laps with the racers ...it was lucky he didn't get killed, or take one of the troops with him. Can you imagine a 125 Yamaha in the 500 class? The dust got bad but for all the confusion of the day there were two good things. The riders had a baU and the amublance didn't have to take anyone away.
