By Bill Spen.cer LIVERMORE., CALIF., Oct. 18. 1970 - In the hilts above the Livermore Valley overlooking the San Francisco Bay, is th,e Cameige Cycle !;'ark and in amongst the rolling hills sits "The Wall". The wall is a 400 ft. mountain criss-crossed witl1 cow trails and 'extremely loose dirt. With no water and the fIrSt winter rains still to come, the track was extremely difficult. The Campbell M.C. held its first annual championship event here and ''The Wall" remained unconquered except for one. Jim True rode his mighty Harley-Davidson up and over the trucky terrain to record the only time of the day on Al Clark's equipment. His run was at 21.l8 sec. and remains as the official fast time for that hill. He received a number of well-deserved awards, including so'me hard gJ'Cen stuff. His toughest competition came from two fellow 650cc Expert riders who ~ook home 2nd and 3rd place trophies. BOX 7'17 MOUNTAIN VIEW CALIF. 94040 Frank Durso went a long 1170 ft. and Mark Smith was onl.y 10 feet back for his best run. True also picked up a second plice in the 250cc Expert class with a tie at 129 feet. He and Manuel Ponte both shared that spot behind Larry Silva who hit the 180 foot marker to place as the highest in the Lightweight Division. Silva rode an exceptionally well prepared BSA to' the win. With the able cooperation of the Hillclimbers Assn. the 146 entries had a full day 0 f ~eat racing. The clubs' ability to work together shows ~p in well run events as was done at this one. The Hard Luck Trophy went to Tom Kennedy for his spectacular, run in which he made a good stab at a hundred feet only to fall off. His bike then decided it wanted tl? go down without any assistance and as it tumbl~d end for end. the bottom of the hill suddenly became as vacant as if a skunk, had just ~kedin. . The 650 Novice class had some close results with Horrendous Henry Gonzales tieing for third spot with Dan Kennedy at 125 feet. Just five feet f~er up the wall was Milt Nunes at 130 ft. and fIrSt was Rex Horey at 146 ft. . The 350 Novice was als6 quite close with Mel Calton at 100 feet, Norm Larson at 98 and Bob Barber at 95. (Results on page 20) A~viso By Patrice Kenyon ALVISO, CALIF., Oct. 19. 1970 - The Eastside M.e. .did a great job of presenting their first Short Track at Alviso. The track is smooth, hard and fast and a great im~rovement over the old surface. . Dave Lewis showed the 100 Novices the way as he led the Main Event from start to finish. He seemed to Itretch his lead more and more each lap, while second pIace man Thornton Smith held off Mike Seidel. After a restart and a few other delays, the 250 Amateurs were off again. Randy Seal jumped into the lead early followed by Pat McCaul, Charles McFimaey and Chuck Miller. Seal and McCaul stayed pretty dose every lap and reaDy put on a good show. The real .action was in the back of the pack though. B~ce Brown had come off the line almost last, but by lap 4 he had worked into 4th position. At the finish of the race it was Seal, McCaul, McFimaey and Brown. . '•••• i •••••••••••••••••• i ••• iN STOCKTON l * PENTON - CZ HUSQVARNA Coleman's. 1545 E. Miner Stockton. Ca. 95205 ph. A.TI-II,UIO.IIITS (D.. lers Writ. For Info. and Prlc.l) PhOne: 916-988-4725 The 250 Experts had all kinds of problems getting started. They kept starting without the flag and just· jumping abead of the line. After about 6 tries they finally got off the line - one rider went -down and a restart was call.ed. Try asain. About five minutes later the flag was dropped and the Experts were on their way again. John Gennai was first into the comer aad never challenged again. Bob Scally was second, Mike Renslow third, Wheeler Gresham fourth. On lap, S, Allen Kenyon came from behind to ,take over fourth, three IaPI later he was second. Scally had dropped back to third and Renslow, who had been passed by Bob Goodman, dro~ back to fifth. Kenyon kept gaming on Gennai a little each lap and Bob Goodman ltarted pressuring Scally. On the next to the last lap Goodman passed Scally to take over third. On the finallap.]ohn Gennai was still the front.runner, Allen Kenyon second, Bob Goodman third and Bob Scalley, fourth.
