Well, this week we'll ruffle up a few more feathers and get onto the subject of the "sporting professional". What's that? Well, to us he's a rider who competes in sporting events (desert, scrambles, motocross etc.) where only trophics arc at stake and gets paid for it. Beforc wc go any further we want to get two things straight. One, we're ccrtainly not against anyone making (which will be split into two parts) made the comment, "The promise of ten bucks can tum some of the 15-through 20-year-olds into absolute animals on the track." Amen. At Saddleback, Sunday, we witnesscd what sporting riding is all about when one rider dropped it, the guy behind him ran right over his body, locked it up, threw his bike against the Romero, Nixon etc. I mean the riders who make up the also-rans, who are lucky if they can get a few bucks for a last place spot in the main. Yet here's "Charley Brown" riding scrambles every Sunday and getting $200 for a win. Other renumerations consist of lesser amounts of money. Naturally, there aren't a lot of $200-tabs floating around but here's some more examples. One scramlillln' arounil money if they get a chance, and two, nobody's name or brand of motorcycle involved will be identificd. You'd be surprised how nervous some people get over things like this. Naturally, some of them don't want their public image of a true-blue sportsman rider tarnished. With easy smiles and friendly ways in the pits they are everything the sporting rider should be: a real sportsman. In reality they are hard-thinking professional riders and in some instances are not mature enough to conduct themselves like professional riders. They will jeopardize their own safety not to mention that of their competitors for that almighty buck. So, recommended reading for them should be Gary Nixon's life story where you fmd out just how the top professional riders do think! One of current top contenders for a number one plate who helped a lot in getting the information for this column track and .rushed back to his downed fellow competitor. Now, if that rider who ran over the other one knew he would get $200 should he win that race, would he have done that? Just kick that around in your head for a bit and come to your own conclusions, taking into consideration the complexities of the individual human animal. My own thoughts on that one shall remain just that, my own thoughts because after a period of time all newspaper reporters tend to view the world with jaundiced eyes. No rose col.ored ~lasses on us! Now back to that $200. That's what we said, $200, and remember now, this was not an advertised purse but what some riders receive for winning a race; any race. Right now there are a small handful of sporting riders who do better ri din g sporting races than some professionals do riding for a purse. How does that one grab you? Naturally, I don't mean people like Aldana, 12SCZ '69* HODAKA 100. Filtron, extended forks, Ceriani back, chamber, gears, head, piston. Fresh paint, street stuff. Excellent condition, race ready. RICKMAN-METISSE rider was promised $1000 and the pink slips on the two scooters he campaigned should he get the number one plate; another who rides two different brands (and sometimes even has three entered in different classes and all legally) gets a flat fee for just riding one brand because he's always up in the front runners any time or place he rides it. F or the second brand he gets X number of dollars for a win graduating upwards with the importance of the event. Elsinore or Hopetown would REALLY payoff. Plus all this, the weekend fringe benefits are that all his entry fees are paid, he gets so much gas money per mile traveled to the track and back and any other expenses needed by he and wife. Meals, motels for a two-day event, etc. are also picked up. Start working that one out and y'ou have a sportsman rider who is doing better than maybe 90% of the true professional riders! In plenty of other cases, riders PIIBm .mICI'Q! DUNSTALL With 650cc competition engine, good condition and needs no work. By Maureen Lee receive a few dollars weekly just for doing well, and what surprised us was that we found cases of this kind in the novice classes, too. It's not just the super-stars who command the money, the novices do, too, and though we all expect novices to ride a bit squirrely maybe the front runners get even more squirrely when there's pay day at the end of the event should they make it! So, O.K. you say. So what the hell is wrong with a guy making money. More power to anyone who's good enough or has the right connections to make some' bread, and we agree. Up to a point. We believe that they do not belong in sportsman events riding with the other guys who have to pay their own bills or are just in it for the thrill of a trophy or a lower number on that next year's plate. At the same time, they needn't be kicked out or forced intd the professional ranks where they belong anyways, there is another solution. Next week we'll cover another facet, the rider who is sponsored or "helped along" by dealers,' manufacturers etc. This fU'St installment is meant to cover the actual cash money paid to riders and we look more leniently on the others who just get a helping hand than we do the ones who make a nice living riding sporting races. Why these columns? Well, scrambles have been going down-hill in this district for quite a while and we have a theory that money has something to do with it and will explain why as we go along. And, once again, think a bit about the SaddIeback incident we mentioned earlier. 1967 BULTACO Lobito looee. Modified for English Trials. Includes Sherpa T flywheel, two gas tanks, two seat. S2OO.00.
