BLAST OR BIG BOMB? BIG BEAR LAKE, CALIF., Oct. 11, 1970 - If another rider had come to Magic Mountain last Sunday, he might have been one too m~ny.They all cameup out of the traffic, noise, and foul air of the city to enjoy the traffic, noise, and clean air of Bob Bailey's First Annual Big Bear Motocross. Several riders openly griped about the smallness of the track, particularly pointing out the lack of a single jump, the large and jagged roc ks, and the poor starting procedure in which creepers . were not peanlized. Some kept their ill-feelings quiet. Many riders', in fact, didn't compete even though they had signed up. Others, however, favored the course. Jim West and Mark Blackwell did seem to be quite happy all day. West on an AJS, had won the flt'St moto while leading a pack of 500 Seniors and Intermediates that seemed to stay lumped together, like Boy Scouts in a dark cave. Their next race was a bit different. Blackwell had taken a huge lead oVer everyone .except West, who kept a huge lead over Blackwell. It wasn't until the third round when Blackwell finally got out in front for good. West played it cool and finished behind Blackwell although he would have loved to have beat him. West was the big winner and Blackwell took second. Third for the day was Jackie Kell, who rode a nifty Rickman·BSA. A 250 Senior, Jim Fishback, was the big winner after taking the fl1'st and last mo tos. The only person to beat him all day was Bob Messer, who seemed to be falling down a lot in the other two' races. Danny Hockie was hot on Fishback's tail most of the time. However, he started the last moto by laying his bike down. It looked as if he stood no chance by the time he got started, but squelched all rumors as he began moving through the pack. Hockie's impressive effort earned him a fourth in the race and a second overall. Donnie Emler and Gary Jones, 125 Se"iors, ,are a couple of talented dudes who fought three good ones. Emler won the first and last contest but Jones did not want to make that job very easy. Both riders, finished each race within seconds of each other but nearly a lap ahead of the rest of the competition. Because Bailey's motocross was considerably different, than the Saddleback·.Q,ay Mare.type circuits, the p' ('".... .j!.,~ - . 51 ml ehro.. i I a hon., u ..._ ',... ~- - ~ Tub. $1 Can $3.45 713 Est.s Street Iowa Falil.
