CODY-RETAINS COSTA MESA LEAD '" i8> ~ o .... en 0" By Mike Caplaite Photos by Dennis Greene N ~ O. COSTA ~IESA, CALIF., Oct. 9, 1970It was defmitely a Friday night for Bill Cody at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Riding for the Valvoline sponsored USA Racing Team, he forged ahead for wins in the Handicap Main Event and the Scratch Main. Rhis added another 140 pOints to his point total to help him retain the lead in the national point standings. Sonny Nutter will be out another week with his injuries, but Rick Woods is moving up fast and the point battle may be a close one decided by the last race. The match race pittted Larry Shaw against Mike Bast which proved to be an exciting match as Larry had already beaten Mike in a Scratch heat by moving up and passing him and Mike was out to ma ke up for that. Shaw in the pole position was first into the comer, but Bast drifted deep and then came back out with a good drive to pass him and take the lead. Shaw tried the same thing on the next comer, but wasn't able to get the traction he needed to pull it off and he followed Mike across the line for the last lap flag. Into the next comer, Shaw fared a little better and was able to move up beside Bast and get a wheel under him going into the last comer. As they came through the last comer wheel to wheel, POll. &A. flOW. ~ w Z W ..J U >U Mike bobbled just a little and that was aU Larry needed as he forged ahead to take th,e win to the cheers of the crowd. The Second Division Main Event was a last comer win for Ron Taylor over Jimmy Stein. In third place was Jim Doran who had done a f'me job of working his way up past fourth place man Paul Henderson after passing fifth place f'misher Yred Ortiz. Finishing in sixth spot was Cecil Oswald. Going the full distance in the Division Three Main was Mike Clancy, holding off bids by second place Sumner McKnight. Holding third was Phil Moon while finishing in fourth and fifth spots were Dave McMahon and Jim Caplinger. The win by Cody in the Handicap Main Event was one of those heartĀ·stoppers for his fans as he was on the 50-yard line with Steve Bast. He beat Steve off the line and moved up on each rider in tum and passed them, having a little trouble getting around his teammate Mike Konle. Carlin Yokum grabbed the lead at the onslaught by virtue of his O-yard handicap and had done a fine job of holding it for five laps right down to the last comer and as he came out going for the finish, Cody was right beside him and it was a drag for (Please tum to pg. 27) 250 And 370 Stormers For All Offstreet Riding Or Racing SUCCESS Malcolm Davies 2 & 4 strokes-cycle and autos racing engines built by ALGUNTER on his 250 AJS (213) 289-1103 phone first-sometimes I'm not home. has won the iWe specialze it Jawa/C-Z,the specialty machines.
