Carl Cranke, who has been having knee trouble, still wowed tbe crowd with victories in both the 125cc and 250cc Sr. divisions, which were run in two motos instead of the regular three because of such a large turnout. All the classes, in fact, were cut to two for the same reason. To win, Cranke had to hold off Bob Grossi, 'back from the Trophee Des Nations in Sweden, and Steve Pestoni in the 125 class. Grossi was second and Pestoni third. In the 250cc class, Cranke switched from a' Sachs to a CZ and bested the efforts of another CZ mounted rider,' Phil Jacobson (second). Greg Hubbs was third. The Open Sr. races were ones to be remembered. Jacobson, Grossi, Cranke, Rory Muskatel, and Billy Grossi battled back and forth in each moto to the great pleas.ure of the spectaton. Phil and Bob tied for IllSt overall. Each had won a moto with a mad dash to the flag on tIie last lap. Muskatel picked up third. In a wild scramble Jeff Younger won the 125 Jr. Div. I ahead of Rick Clement and Kevin Henry. Gary Ceo Allen Becomes By John CALIF., Sept. 26, 1970 - The 250cc Handicap Main victory at Cycleland SpeedWay meant a great deal to Joe Allen. Besides being his 12th win in the class over the past several years, it also was the stepping stone _ to a hard-earned honor - the title of "Scratchman". He now joins such stan as George McCarty, Dick Turner, Mike Rockwell and Mike Corcoran in the elite row which lines up 50-yards behind the start because of proven ability and not as punishment. It is short track's highest acknowledgement for prowess on the oval. Another comer which may soon be given the same handicap is Rollen Eskew. Tonight the speedster won both the 100cc Handicap and Scratch Mains. Eskew simply rides harder and has too much power for the others to contend with. He appean to be in a class by himself at Cycleland. John Grant also took a pair of fJrSls home with him as he powered to 200cc and 250cc Scratch Main victories a ~:o~~J'I,O;~~ETS ' 12TOOTH CZCounter Sprockets $9.25 Cal. res. add 5% sales tax. 350-500cc division and was aided when Foley and John Green jumped the line and were moved far behind the pack as a penalty. Green battled back, however, to fmish third just behind Jim Saitone. The Arnaiz brothers also did very well for themselves as Gene pushed to the lead of the 100 Am·Ex. class and held on for the win and Tony got on the tail of Dave Russel in the 650cc Novice Main and settled for second. Proceeds from the race go to the Retarded Children of Stockton and over the past seven yean, Stockton's motorcycle clubs have garnered $30,000 in cash donations. The Stockton Scramblers, Port of Stockton and Lodi M.C. were several of the other clubs that aided the Stockton M.C. in this year's event which drew 329 riders and 3500 spectaton Coleman's, 1545 E. Main (415) •• Inut Ct., CII. SANTA ROSA, CALIF., Sept. 26, 1970 - Bill Stockham from Vallejo on a Yamaha won the 250cc Expert class final at the Chris Beck Arena Saturday night. With only one more scheduled race there this year, Stockham becomes the sixth rider in six meetings to win the Expert f'mal of the sportsman short track racing. Wins in the l00cc Novice fmal by Werner Meesenburg and the 200cc Novice final by Steve Knechthe create drama for the lmal race Staurday, October 3. Both riders have an excellent chance to win the season point trophy. Current point leader, Tom Fleming has been advanced to the Amateur class where he is competing in the 175cc Amateur final. One of the best rides of the night was· by Dan Leet from Mill Valey in the 125cc Novice Imal. He worked his way up from last on the starting lap to second place in the 10-lap fmal. Ed Stonebraker from Richmond, who lost to Le~t at Vallejo on the previous night, successfully held off his attempts to pass for first. His attempt at a clean sweep of the Expert mains was cut short early when he only managed a fifth in the 250cc class. In that race John Gennai, Jim Foley and Jim Crenshaw put on a real show. Gennai jumped out with the lead over District 36 Number One plater Foley and held on desperately until the end. Foley grabbed second and Crenshaw third. Trumbull's ftrst win came in the overall honon in the Open Jr. Div. I when both riders collected a fllSt. Bultaeo rider Ed Rosman came in third after a hard fall during the wheeJie contest. Greg Johnson and Kurt Jorgenson tangled in the next division's pair of motos and Johnson was able to gain enough points to take lint just ahead of Jorgenson. (Results on page 22) (Buf) did likewise to Kort McKinny and Chuck Clark in Div. II. The third division fell to a newcomer" Bob Hoffman, in easy fashion. A battle to the wire typified the 250 Jr. Div. I as Tom Walton (AJS), Bill DePratto and Randy Pean had sights of the flag. Walton won out and DePratto tagged second. Bill Greene ran away with his two motos in Div. II.
