fnJuro of silly maneuvering. The riders had to carry a. card with them whic·h the checker marked at .each check. At gas checks the riders traded the old card for a new one. This system virtually eliminates the "Yeah, r made that check!" "Well we didn't see you!" sort of hassle. Timing, which was accomplished by ultra sophisticated Bulova watches, seemed to be very close, and distance measurements were within the accuracy normally expected on enduros. After my last article, every CERA member it seemed took great delight in pointing out the fact that there were johns in adequate number. It is hereby noted and recorded. There was also a concession stand and an impassioned plea to leave the desert clean on the ins truction sheet. The International RAcing Radio Crew was on hand to pull out the injured. Now about the World Championship bit. Ed Wight tells me that he checked with tbe FIM and found that there is no world championship category for enduros, so his association is sanctioning world championships. Since the CERA is at least trying to keep points records on its members, regardless of what enduros they ride, it seems that he is at least a step ahead. of any other organization (like the AMA) so maybe his claim is justified. On the other hand, the enduro fell a little short of world championship standards. F or one thing, it was advertised as a 200 mile event but it was actually only 162.5 miles. For another thing, I don't think it was quite tough enough. Due to a dumb computational ..... "'---''-- ....I(Continu.edfrompagell) error, I got dver a half hour ahead of accompany this report. (213) 861-1307, gentleman to say the leaSt who bounced around on a totally unprepared Vamaha but who managed to be one of the leaders at the top of the hill off the starts. Good riding, Bob Nicholson! Bruce McDougal on a Yamaha won the 100 Junior and he was flat whistling. He and Brad McKee and Mike Paulseel all wore Orange County Honda colors and were very easy to spot anywhere on the course. Mark Stevenson on a little Suzuki that really screamed took the second overall followed by Paulseel and Bob Rowe Jr. all Hodaka-mounted. McKee, after such a good start was put out of it with mechanical difficulties in the first round. AU credit goes too to Ken Zahrt on a Bultaco. He Ii terally turned almost completely sideways at the top of the hill, one foot flying around in the air and yet didn't lose it! Talk about a handling machine! That very crowded class, .the 125's, ran Juniors and Seniors together. There were only three Seniors, and Davey Davis (BuI) collected the Senior gold but the Juniors were never far behind. Mark Rick on another Bultaco was the Junior winner and was never' far from the lead spot. The Rickman Micro Metisses were in evidence with Tom MacNamara taking the third spot on one behind Dick Frampton on yet another Bultaco. ' ,Once again, it was a good day, perfect weather ,and no dust. Now, if someone could just figure out a way to stop that Saddleback earth from turning into asphalt, we'd have it made!
