(Continued from page 3) End Noise g: ." '" l1. o Bob Bailey, Inc., who manufacturers a fine line of expansion chambers, is developing a line of mufflers and spark arresters. He is working on a new principle for his spark arrester and feels that his spark arrester will offer better £low characteristics than those utilizing the Krizman principle. His silencers ar~ very similar in design to both J & R and the Bassani devices. Many of the bike manufacturers are making provisions for muffling on their dirt bikes and some are making provisions for some kind of spark arrester. AU Yamaha Enduro models have both features. Their spark arresters utilize the Krizman principle. The Harley Davidson Baja models will have several devices available as options to fit into an enlarged tailpipe. These will BOOK REVIEW By Sharon Oxner 'This is a book written by a motorcycle rider, not an author. You can expect some honest opinions, personal prejudices and unintentional lack of mention. You also will find the experiences of years of riding, laying out, timing, pit crewing and spectating, clearly explained in a way that will help you become a beller competitor and enjoy the sport of off-road motorcycling." Thus opens the new 37 page textbook on Enduro riding :'eing published by N-Duro Specialties. We find .this book to be very informative , for the beginner who doesn't have any concept of what he is getting himself in for. The book explains very bluntly what the sport involves and it is so detailed that it almost tells you step-by-step how to lace your boots. There are also many tidbits of infonnation that even the "Expert Enduro Rider" can benefit from; such as a spark plug conversion chart and a special section on navigation problems, something even the best riders encompass occasionally. For those who are new to the Enduro Circuit this book will give you informative information that would take at least two years of discouraging agony to acq uire. Also included is one of the easiest, cleanest enduros you will ever see, map and all, and it is all on paper. Why not take your fltSt ride with an experienced rider and let the author of this text give you a few hints while he takes all the bruises? Just ride behind him for the flI'St one, then the "soloH won't seem so bad. You'll already be broken in; shins and all. The author W.R•. Grace has been riding since the age of 12. He began his career with a Whizzer and later advanced to a bored-out 80cc Harley which he blew up while passing a truck. He became interested in endures approximately 6 years aio and has been q wte active in the laying-out, pit crewing and riding, thus giving him a thorough background in the sport. The paperbound edition is available for S2.95 from Enduro Specialties, P.O. Box 212, Mauldin, S.C. 29662A revised edition is to be published in the fall with accessional illustrations and added text. include a normal stinger, a silencer and a spark arrester. According to Dave Ekins, who has had a large part in the development of the Baja, a new spark arrester/silencer is just about to be offered for the Baja. This will quiet the bike down to 86 dbA and increase the power by about .5 hp throughout the range. Usable power will be increased by 1000 rpm. Although this sounds incredible, Dave says it has been dyno checked. We have just begun to be conscious of our responsibility to keep the desert and our riding areas clean and free of trash and garbage. Let's start trying to rid th e atmosphere of sound poUution as well. in the design and prototype stages but there are none as yet in the stores. It probably occurs to some people that if you have to have a silencer on your bike anyway, you might as well put a license on it and be able to ride it on the street. This isn't such a bad idea as long as you realize the limitations of / NEW VISORS AVAILAILE The new Grand Prix tinted visors and full and half flat face shields come in smoke, green, ice blue, yellow gold, mint green and white.
