.... N ~ Q. o .... '0> N' N By Rod Breaker LOSS OF CLUTCH DIS ENG A G EM E NT ON TRIUMPH TIGER CUB On the early 200cc Triumph Cub and 150cc Terriers, the right hand outer engine cover had to be removed to install a new clutch cable. Many riders found that after replacing a clutch cable or else after re-assembling the engine after a tear-down, that they were unable to obtain the proper clutch adjustment. Even by taking all the slack out of the handlebar adjuster and running the adjuster on the clu tch pressure plate all the way in, it was still impossible to get the clutch to operate correctly. The reason for the inability to adjust the clutch usually lies in the fact that there is a small steel ball located in the clutch operating lever which had fallen out when the cover was removed and gone unnoticed by the rider. (This is usually the problem, but the same situation exists if the clutch push rod is forgotten.) These steel balls llave an uncanny knack for finding inaccessible spots on your garage floor to disappear into and finding them is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. If you should happen to lose one of these, don't panic; any 5/32 ball bearing will suffice, these can be picked up at any bearing house, or if there is a Triumph dealer handy, the part number if T-1124. To help prevent losing it again when installing it or if the cover should be taken off again, apply a p;ood packing ~ w of grease into the pocket for the ball on the lever and push the bearing down into it, this will lubricate it and hold it in position as well. When adjusting the clutch, keep in mind that you should back off all the adjustments on the cable first and then start by screwing in the adjuster on the outer clutch pressure plate. This adjuster is right beneath the inspection hole on the clutch plate. This adjuster should be run in lightly until it can be felt that it has taken up all the play in the push rod and then backed off Y2 turn and locked down. The correct lever adjustment can then be made with the cable adjuster. Z ~ ~ U CHILL HITS TRACK Ball pen points to location of oft-times lo~t steel ball on clutch operating lever of Triumph Cub.
