Water Can In Sky Greases MX Track By Larry Montgomery PLACERVILLE, CALIF., Sept. 4,1970 - The great water can in the sky greased the track at P1a<:erville during practice and caused numerous spills, but by racj~g time, the track was in perfect condition and there was none of the urual dust. With many of the local seniors in E;urope or in Southern California, Juniors Steve Pestoni and Tom Madlem had a field-day. Pestoni spilled while leading the first moto of 125cc Senior and dropped to third, but easily won the second and th ird mo tos to get th e overall win on his Sachs; ahead of Madlem on a Penton and Mike McGowan on a Bultaco. The trio did battle again in the 250cc Senior event, with Tom getting the overall win, still on his Penton. Mike got a second on his Husky. The 500cc Senior class was an easy sweep for Greg Hubbs (Mai) , with Martin DeVries second on. a Husky. In Division I of 125cc Jr. action, Chuck Clark (Duc) won one moto and placed second in the other two to beat out Steve Doll and Gary Ceo. Kevin Henry easily won all three motos of Division II on his Yamaha. Gregg Nibbelink was second, Rick Clement third. Glenn Fulcher won the second and third motos in 250cc Junior-Div. I after starting the first mo to with no gas in his CZ. The two finishes were enough to sive him third overall behind Rick Starr (Oss) and Wendall Snider (Yam) who dueled closely through all three motos. Division II went to Ross Westphal on a Montesa ahead of the Yamahas of Jack Mitchell and Randy Pean. earl Roderick put his Mako out of sight of the rest of the pack in all three motos of Open Junior, trying hard to erase the embarrassment of the 125cc class, in which he rode a very sick Yamaha. Scott Gerhardt finished second on a CZ and Bob Hanson was third on a Husky. Despite quite a few complaints about the track, things went very smoothly. The main events started off with Dave Lewis' win in the 100 Novice class. He had no problem at all from start to finish while Ron A1shop and Jim Ferguson fought for their second and third place trophy positions. Mike Menesini kept his Kawasaki out in front until the checkered flag in the 100 Amateur class. Owen Golway rode Mike's rear wheel the whole race, but finally settled for a comfortable second ahead of Don Franco. Picking up a first in the 200 Amateur class was John Dawson. Rob McChesney worked hard for second place coming clear from sixth in only four laps. Doug Jamison and Jim Casey looked as though they were out for blood as they fought back and forth in the 250 Novice race. On the last lap of the race, Jamison kept the gas on just long enough to inch ahead of Casey for the win. Tom Kpriva f'mished off the trophy positions for third place. Chalk up another win for Steve Foster. The 250 Amateur just seems to have a knack for taking home first place trophies as he proved again Sunday. Roger Brunei rode a good race for second with Mike Burleson third. The 250 Experts jetted off the line and into the first corner was cool and calm John Gennai coming out ahead. Mike Rens10w and point leader Jim Foley rode hard and fast, but just couldn't catch Gennai. Their positions stayed the same clear up through the checkered flag. Honda rider Larry Schutz won the 500 Am. with very little struggle. Bob Rickerts stayed in a safe, comfortable second while Sherwin grabbed third. As the racing season gets nearer to a close the Expert points are the thing to watch. Bill Bourgeois got a good start in the 500 Expert, followed by John Greene and Bill CaJicura. On lap four, Bourgeois went wide jus a bit, but it was enough for Greene to get by_From then on positions didn't chanR". Craig Godwin won another 650 Amateur Main Event on his super tuned Triumph. It won't be long before we'U be seeing him in the Expert class. Ron Talbot and John Brumond, also Triumph mounted, turned in fast rides CZENDURO SPROCKETS C&II SPECIALTIES -P.O. BOX 717 MOUNTAIN VIEW, C.AUF. 94040 for the runner-up positions. It was a very excited milkman who won the 650 Expert class. Phil Ray, part time race and full time milkman, turned' in a very fast and consistent ride to win the Main Event. Jerry Chadim, Wheeler Gresham and Dan Hughes put on equally exciting rides as they swapped positions lap after lap. First it would be Ray, Chadim, Hughes, GrC!ham; next lap it would be Ray, Gresham, Hughes, Chadim. On checkered flag lap they finally sorted themselves out, making it Ray, Chadim, Gresham and Hughes. The Eastside club is planning another race at Alviso in the near future. They have already started drawing up ideas on how to best improve the track for both the riden and spectators. Green and Foley are competing for the number "I" title in the district with defending titlest Foley having a slight lead in the current standings. Bill Budde won the final race Friday night, the 650cc Expert class, riding a Triumph. The 650cc class awarded two trophies so Budde's points for that race were three.
