Bast Scores Sacramento Grand 'Slam Story & Photos by Dennis Greene I SACRAMENTO, CALIF., Sept. 12, 1970 - National Champion Steve Bast. scored his first grand slam victory by "winning the Handicap Heat, Semi, and Main, Scratch Heat, Semi, and Main, and ripped off a good win against Rick Woodsin a Special Match. The debut for Speedway racing at the Cal Expo Rodeo Arena in Sacramento was dampened by a bitingly cold wind and a pOOT surface. But the fans' enthusiasm fOT their introduction to Class A Speedway racing was more than gratifying to the new pr0!D0ters ' Gus andAI Lauer. The new surface presented some old problems in handling. Rick 'Woods caught a rut for his second fall of the year, Scott Autrey fell an uninjured' victim to the rough surface, and several of the other riders suffered similar fates. The only other opportunIties for first position were in the Consolation~events, the Handicap going to John Fishburn, and Scratch to. Wild B'ill Cody. The climax of th~ evening was a mad scramble by the riders for payoffs, followed by a dash. to the nearest airport for southbound planes to compete in Sunday's races at San Gabriel. Hosts' First Of Series By Larry Montgomery WOODLAND, CALIF., Sept. 6, 1970 In a shady grove of oak trees along the Sacramento River, Cal-Am Raceway hosted the first round of a two race motocross series Sunday. A dry wind had' dried out the track severely and dust was a problem,' obscuring the racer's view on some parts of the course towards the end of the day. Many of the spectators beat the heat and dust with a drip,in the nearb,)! swimming pool. ,. Chuck Goodrich on a Sachs swept all three motos of 125cc Novice Division 1. In the first moto, Bill Grossi worked up from a fourth place to press Chuck and take second. In the second moto, Bill led for three laps, then lost several places and in trying to move back up, bumped into Kevin Henry's rear tire and fell off. He did not start the third moto. Gary Davis got second place on'a Sachs. Doug Little took Division II on a Pento, with Bob Sorenson I'lacing second on an Eagle. Bob Moore (Sachs) took Amateur honors, winning one moto overall in the combined 125cc Am-Ex. race. Jim Monegan won the other two motos and first in the Expert class on a Hodaka. Ray Hinson won the third moto and the overall title in 250cc Division I after the winner of the first two motos, Glenn Fulcher, got wrapped up in the rubber band in a messed up start. Fulcher ended up with second overall _4L JIM JOHNSON -""""'" CAMPUS SUZUKI Service and Sales ""''''00 (415) 616-6114 flAN' CIANE YAMAHA I MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE FOR SALE 511 _UIIEIIT BLVD •• COIICDRD.
