A little tip on getting these bolts to use as Allen wrenches; if you get them from a Suzuki shop, specify that you want '5' bolts. These are bolts with the Suzuki 'S' emblem on the head which is their way of designating 'strong' bolt or extra hard bolt. Hopkins then picked up a hundred dollars and a gift kit from K&W Products for the win. Incidentally, Dale Hopkins is sponsored by K&W Products of Whittier. Danny Hockie finished just behind Hopkins for the second spot, while Jim Barnes, riding a Yamaha, placed third, with Richard Trait taking fourth. Ron Powell held on for a fifth place finish. Both Hockie and Barnes also received a gift kit from K&W Products. The 125 IT race that was run just before the fifty lapper was also won by Dale Hopkins. Hopkins with the back to back wins was a pretty tired guy by the end of the night. Paul Wilde finished second on his Yamaha in the event;with Scott Sivadge taking third also mounted on a Yamaha. Kirk Redding was the winner of the 100 IT Main Event. Redding was riding a Kawasaki in his victory. Paul Wilde riding a Yamaha was second, while Joe Monohan took third on his Yamaha. Redding also went on to win the 100 flat Track Main Event. This time Mark Revels placed second, with Bob Sanders bringing his Kawasaki in third. In the Heat Race Scott won his 14th straight five lapper without a loss on his Yamaha. This Friday marks the return of all the half milers as they will be in the west for the rest of the month. Out of town fans can see both the half milers and the IT aces in action next week when the IT riders compete at Ascot on friday night, Sept. 18th and then the 12th annual running of the Ascot half miles goes on Saturday night, Sept. 19th. Gene Romero was sputtering along on one cylinder, attempting to grab a few more laps. Keith Mashburn, Tom Rockwood, Bill Eves, and Yvon DuHamel were in and out of the pits with desperate repairs. Don Castro, with a shattered hot shoe, thrilled the crowd by passing the stands at speed with his foot on the handlebars, undoing the buckle. Then Rayborn locked it up, and that moved Gary Nixon into second place. The remainder of the field was sputtering along on sick motors. Mark Brelsford dropped out next, leaving Dave Sehl with the only XR to complete the grind. Chuck's Yamaha was getting flatter and flatter in tone, and on the yellow flag lap he struggled by at only half a competitive pace. Only Nixon, Castro, and Sehl seemed to be running under full power, and only Nixon was close enough to threaten the lead. But Palmgren nursed his dying mount by the checkered flag, commenting later that he had doubts that the fmal tour could be completed. Nixon, Castro, Sehl, Smith, and frank Gillespie followed, some running as far as five laps behind. As testimony of the brutalizing effect the afternoon had had on machinery, Mark Breslford stated, "Somebody blew on the back stretch and a rod shot past my head - a whole rod!" It's relatively easy to wire in an alarm system. If you're going to be gone for a while, pull off one or both of the wheels and put them in a different location. Then chain what's left to an immovable object. Dealers contribute to the theft problem in two important ways.-first they minimize the problem to the buyer. This is understandable but very short·sighted. Its pretty hard to tell a customer, "I would like you to buy this shiny new Sportster, but you must realize that it will cost you about $370.00 to insure it (with a $250 deductble of course) and that it will probably be stolen within 28 days. If everything goes right, the insurance will probably cover what you owe on it and all you'll lose is your $800.00 down payment. Sign right here." A dealer might just lose a few sales that way. On the other hand, the cost of insurance on big bikes is costing many sales already and the only way to cut that cost is to make it hard on the thieves. And a buyer who is unaware of the theft problem is an easy mark. The other way that dealers contribute to the theft problem is by buying hot parts. Everyone who's been around the motorcycle business a while knows which dealers are buying hot parts. Unfortunately it's almost impossible to prove and the police are much more interested in busting kids for dope than in catching motorcycle thieves. The answer is, fmd out who in your neighborhood is buying hot parts, spread the word and boycott his shop. Get a metal stamp and put your initials on every major piece of metal. Then if your bike is stolen, tell the police about it, if you can find one who will take a report. John Maynard offers a discount to anyone who installs a theft alarm on ms bike. This discount, in some cases, will more than cover the cost of the device. Maynard told me that he will offer a similar discount to anyone who buys and uses a good chain. This is a small step in the right direction and one of the few positive notes I found in my study of the subject. While on the subject, he also gives discounts to riders who have completed driver's education courses. There is another coverage usually tacked onto fire and Theft which is called "COMPREHENSIVE". Tms protects you in case your motorcycle is eaten by a voracious iguana, or struck by a bolt of lightning from the hand of an angry and indiscriminate god. It doesn't cover you during wars and insurrections. In short it's not worth much, but you might not have any choice about buying it if you purchase fire and theft. . If you are hit by an uninsured motorist, you are not covered unless you have al!'"eed to have UNINSURED MOTORIST INSURANCE. G ~CUSTO. S'OlfS~ There are a couple of coverages which you might be forced to buy if you rmance your bike. These do ahsolutely nothing for you and are explitive in every sense of the term because you only buy these coverages when you are poor and are financing your bike at what are already exhorbitant rates. One such coverage is variously called C.E.S. or "Skip" coverage and it protects the dealer, in case you decided to leave the country without paying for your scooter. Another is called "Vender Single interest" which protects the finance company if the bike is stolen. You get nothing, but you pay for the insurance. These coverages are nothing but additional finance charges. They will never be purchased by a person with substantial assets and' should not have to be purchased by anyone. . As mentioned before, insurance policies are full of loop-holes and the only way you can find them is to have someone point them out, or read the policy verv carefully. Brokers will be happy to show you some o'f the loop-noles because they have coverages (at additional cost, of cours) for those holes. for instance, if you're involved in a collision, most policies don't cover the tow charges. They don't cover your transportation expenses .while your bike is being repaired. They don't cover you while you're driving someone else's motorcycle. Etc. As a first step in your battle for survival, learn to read the jargonistic garbage in which contracts are written. Next week, Insurance for the off-road rider.
