TT fALLS TO fOLEY Odom Bags Half-Mile By Patrice Kenyon SAN JOSE, CALIF., Sept. 7,1970 With weather being a perfect 94 degrees, a good crowd turned out for the Labor Day San Jose Half-Mile. The racing was just as h at wi th riders coming from as far as Washington to ride. Yamaha mounted Gary Scott turned in a superb ride by beating out favored Kenny Roberts. Both riders put considerable distance ahead of Ossa ace Les Costanza as Scott went on to set a very fast six-lap heat race time. Bruce Teixeria led the next heat race for four laps until Roy Geddis of San Jose passed him in the fourth corner. Jim Rice followed them in for a third. Plenty of excitement followed with four Amateur heat races. Terry Dorsch won heat number one followed by Washington rider Pat Marinacci and Ron Davies third. John Fritz led off heat two with Billy Morgan close behind on his Harley-Davidson. They rode close together for five laps with Fritz keeping the upper hand. Then in the third corner of lap six Morgan just seemed to let loose, passing Fritz just in time to take the checkered flag. Heat three was won by Kris Bakke who led from start to finish. Ray Vatney finished second with Dave BeUina working up from eighth to take over third. Adam Lee put ip a good ride to take heat four. Tim Thomas and Harry Dring followed for second and third. Rookie Dave Hansen of Hayward jumped into the lead in Expert heat one. From then on it was Hansen all the way. Eddie Wirth and Sonny Burres rode to second and third positions with Ron Kruseman right behind. Ken Boyer started off, but only held the lead for a lap in the next heat when Bob ScalI y passed him and started to pull away. After two laps Scally suffered motor problems and had to pull out. That left the lead to Jim Odom who had come from way back. Tim Harris, riding a Yamaha, was second and Squire Tomasie third. Don Dudek gathered a fourth out of it. A twenty minute intermission and then race time again. Roberts, who ahd apparently been doing some tuning between race time, jetted off the line with Scott second, Roy Geddie third. Greene worked up to fourth on lap three and stayed close to Costanza until the last lap when he went wide and Turner snuck in to take over fourth. They went over the finish line Roberts 'CZ ENDURO SPROCKETS C&M SPECIALTIES - P.O. BOX 717 MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. 94040 Gordy Williams CYCLE CITY W~~~t~~~~:I. Tonigh t's competition was no exception. A new rider this year at Triple 'M' is Bert Clark of Yuba City. This being his first year of racing, he had done exceptional. Thus far he has taken eight trophies home! He rides in the 100 or Novice and tonight the competition was tough! A dozen riders returned for the Main and it was close all the way. Crossing for the checkered was Dale Stetler on a Hodaka. Fighting his way up to hold on to second place was Ted Davidson on a Bridgestone. Taking a close third was Bill Cloud as Clark powered his Hodaka to a fourth place in a spectacula,r finish. Anoth er close race came during the 200cc Novice when John Hearne (Bul) jumped out for the lead. Then, during the fifth lap, Joe Carando (BuI) was hot on his trail ...very hot. As the yellow flag dropped indicating last lap, Carando really turned it en and ride he did because as he crossed for the checkered it was so close only the officials, who are up high, could actually tell it was Corando. What a finish! Hearne was second and Billy Rainer, also on a CONCORD, CALIF. EO> Ul ~ w Z W ..J U >- U Bultaco, a fantastic third. Thrilling the audience tonight was the 100/125/200 Am-Exp. race. Neil McDannald, who took first by at least half a lap, rode first time tonight as an Expert: Taking second was Larry Fry (Kaw) who earlier this year was a Novice, and third is another rider wl>o advanced this year from Novice to Amateur, John Vance (BuI). The 250 Novice was another fun ftlled event. It was real light in the first turn and it was anybody's race. Working his way from the back of the pack to take the win was Yamaha ridden Kurt Jorgenson. The Amateur Main Event started off with Kris Bakke and Terry Dorsch practically side by side. Pretty soon Dorsch pulled away from Bakke while Lee and Ray Vatney battled and Bellina kept moving up a little more each lap from 10th position. On lap eight the finishing positions were determined making it Dorsch first, Bakke second, Bellina third. Hansen and Odom went into the first comer of the Expert final almost side by side. Hansen left the throttle on a little bit longer coming out ahead and led it for almost six laps followed by Odom, Wirth and Burres. On lap seven Odom slipped by Hansen on the front straight and from then on it was Odom, Hansen, Burres, Tomasie, Wirth, Kruseman and Russ Powell. (Results on page 22) By James E. Brammer VALLEJO, CA., Sept. 4, 1970 - Jim Foley took a double win at Vallejo Speedway Friday night in the Sportsman's TT races. He captured the lO-lap, 250cc Expert final riding a Bultaco, then repeated in the 10-lap, 500cc Expert final on a Yamaha. In the early laps of the 250cc race, Rick Hocking from Fremont led, followed by John Green and Foley in third. Green attempted to pass Hocking over the jump for first, but apparently on the'recovery, the two bikes locked , together. Green pulled off the track in the following corner with Hocking's mount in tow. This left Foley in the lead for an easy win. Green returned to the race and worked his way back to finish in third behind Mike Renslow from Fremont. Again in the 500cc Expert final, the jump was Green's downfall with Foley leading and Green in second on a Montesa. Green made the jump at a tremendous speed and was not able to fully recover in time for. the following comer. He crashed hard but was up and walking before the Montesa came to a stand still. The pack slowed with the red flags out, but Foley was clear for a runaway win with time to do spectacular wheelies on the back straighaway in the closing laps of the race. The Hi Hats Motorcycle Club successfully completed' the evening's 45-race program by II :30 p.m. ahead of the 12:00 o:clock curfew without cutting any events short. To manage the large entry of novice riders in the 250cc class, first and second place finishers in the qualifying heats were advanced to an "A'.' final, and the third and fourth place qualifiers advanced to a "B" final.
