INDIANAPOLIS, IND., Sept. 7,1970 After winning the National, the first
thing that Dave Aldana said was "I want
to thank Dick Mann for letting me ride
his motorcycle."
Aldana captured his third National
tonigh t on the Indianapolis mile track,
taking the lead in the Expert Final from
early leader Cal Rayborn, after about
six laps. From this point on, Aldana
lengthened his lead with every lap,
taking the checkers by more than half a
mile.
Second in the Expert Final following
some fine riding in the last lap, was Tom
Rockwood. Third went to last ear's
winner, Larr.y Palmgren. Gene Romero
was fourth. Harley riders Rayborn,
Brelsford, Sehl, and Fulton followed.
These riders constituted "The Pack"
well behind Aldana, whose time was
19:57:82
Jim Rice's flywheel disintegrated and
he finished about 16th in the Expert
Main.
The Amateur Final was won by Rik
Holly, who rode on Rex Beauchamp's
rear wheel for most of the race. Coming
out of the final turn Holly managed to
slingshot past Beauchamp and win by
two feet. Third was Don Emde,
followed by Denny Palmgren, Gary
Fisher, John Gardner (H·D) , Terry
Blackburn (H·D), Lachlaw Beatson
(BSA), Earl Miller (Tri) , and Paul
