C- " Last Three Nationals rn ~ w 2 w INDIANAPOLIS, IND., Sept. 7,1970 After winning the National, the first thing that Dave Aldana said was "I want to thank Dick Mann for letting me ride his motorcycle." Aldana captured his third National tonigh t on the Indianapolis mile track, taking the lead in the Expert Final from early leader Cal Rayborn, after about six laps. From this point on, Aldana lengthened his lead with every lap, taking the checkers by more than half a mile. Second in the Expert Final following some fine riding in the last lap, was Tom Rockwood. Third went to last ear's winner, Larr.y Palmgren. Gene Romero was fourth. Harley riders Rayborn, Brelsford, Sehl, and Fulton followed. These riders constituted "The Pack" well behind Aldana, whose time was 19:57:82 Jim Rice's flywheel disintegrated and he finished about 16th in the Expert Main. The Amateur Final was won by Rik Holly, who rode on Rex Beauchamp's rear wheel for most of the race. Coming out of the final turn Holly managed to slingshot past Beauchamp and win by two feet. Third was Don Emde, followed by Denny Palmgren, Gary Fisher, John Gardner (H·D) , Terry Blackburn (H·D), Lachlaw Beatson (BSA), Earl Miller (Tri) , and Paul Pressgrove (BSA).
