The proverbial Scott-Roberts duel Friday night, with Kenny (BOy) Roberts ending up on top of the Novice heap_ Nortons One-Two At Ascot GARDENA, CALIF., Sept. 4, 1970 Jody Nicholas, the latest of the hotshoes at Ascot, tonigh t further estahlished himself as a ·half miler hy joining Mert Lawwill and Tom Rockwood as the only back to back main event winners this year. Nicholas, in his final test before the return of all the half mile stars this coming Friday, was again the rider to heat right from the time trials until the main event. The new ace and his Harold Allison Norton 750 timed a blazing 22:75, which is the second fastest time turned in this year. Jody was headed for defeat in the heat race but came on for the win on the final lap. A slow start had him in 6th place on the first lap, but power and ability again paid off, as he got by Lloyd Houchins on the fmal lap to take the win. Mel Lacher, the Ascot Point Champ in '69, went into the fmal still looking for his first Main Event of the year. The first lap looked like Lacher was finally going to do what he has been trying to do since early April, as he powered his Harley into the lead. At the end of the second round, Nicholas was again under a full head of stcam in front with Houchins coming on strong. A few laps later Lacher had dropped to fourth, with Seabourne moving to third. As Nicholas continued to pour it on, the race was for second between Houchins and Seabourne. The late laps saw Shorty move to second, giving Norton and Allison a one-two finish Three different riders led the Amateur final before Nick Theroux and his BSA moved to the front and on for the win over Terry Dorsch and his Triumph.
