Texas Road Race ".~ Season Ends By John Blanton Ci en '" l@ w Z W ..J U >- U GREEN VALLEY, TEXAS, Aug. 23, 1970Jim Hall staged the last of this season's Sportsman road races at Green Valley Raceway today, and, although some of the more notable local talent, such as Rusty Bradley and Virgil Davenport were oft to other things (Bradley to Bonneville and Davenport to Peoria) there was still excitement In the Open Class as Larry Beall came up from San Antonio to successfully challenge Delgado's Honda and Jim Lutz' Norton on the Dan Jamessponsored Harley. Jody Delgado was first to the hairpin on the first lap of the heat, but by the next turn it was Beall out front. Then on the follOWing lap, Jim Lutz passed the Honda and began to challenge the lead. On the last lap, lutz passed the Harley, and the leaders finished Lutz, Beall, Delgado. The Open Class FInal started much the same way, but this time Lutz stuck the Norton in the hay near the east bridge and was not able to make up the time. Beall finished the Harley in first place ahead of Delgado's Honda and Jet Thirp' S Yamaha• . There was ample excitement In the smaller classes, too, and It started In the 125cc heat as Casey Jones (Yamaha), riding like the wind, took the win, pursued every Inch of the way by Edward Green (Yamaha), scratching for all his worth. The contest continued on into the first lap of the 200cc heat as the two Yamaha riders advanced their bikes Into that class to have another go atit. On the first lap, the first to arrive at the east bridge corssIng was Lutz on a 200cc Bultaco, but the second to arrive was not a 200 but was Jones, nearly flat out on the Yamaha, and coming up behind him was Green, charging very hard and way off his line. It wa:s 1m mediately apparent that Green would hit the bridge wall, but when he tried to correct his line, he tossed the bike away completely and slid into the hay at a terrific clip. He was rushed to the hospital, obviously stunned, but he was Determination is etched on the face of Mike Cone during 250cc road races at Green Valley Raceway. The determination paid off as Cone finished atop the pack in both the heat and main races. soon call1ng the track and requesting a ride back to the races. His injuries proved to be minor. On seeing the debris from Green's crash, Lutz pulled In, and Jones finished ahead of Mark Carbonie (Bul) and Robert Schuckman (Kaw). Results In the 200cc fInal were Carbonie, Lutz, and Jones. Both the heat and the final In the 250cc Class were run-aways for Mike Cone and Jet Tharp (Yam) as they led the remainder of the field In that order for the duration of the events. Production Class winners were Pee Wee Gleason on a Yamaha In the 125cc Class, Tommy Byars on a Suzuld in the 250, Byars again on a Suzuld In the 500 ITS HERE!l and Lutz on the Storm's Cycle Norton Commando In the Open. Notable In Texas road racing these days is the appearance of some very good racing Ducatls, some of them desmos. Time was if you did not show up on a twostroke twin you would be laughed off the grid, but In the 250cc Final there was a tight little group of five bikes that wh1pped around the corner for lap after lap, forever In each other's shadows, occasionally swapping positions. And three of them were Ducatls.
