o I o .... '" aj By Julie Sandoval and Bob Hill 15. rn " rn 3: GARDENA, CALIF., Aug. 27, 1970- The absence of Jim WUson, Tim Hart, and Bob Messer due to injuries and other reasons, was indeed noticed by many of their fans, but did not interfere with Rich Thorwaldson's style or ability, as he soared around the Ascot Track to sweep the 500 Expert Class with ease. With or without speedy Jim WUson to compete with, Rich Is always UP front on his Metlise. John Maynard gave a strong chase in an effort to overtake Thorwaldson in the tirst moto, but Rich had other Ideas, with Maynard settliog for second place points, Bob Hershey In third ahead of Mike Cram and Bob Davis. Steve Elsworth popped UP at Asoct this evening and walked off with the 250 w z W ...J U > U Expert-Intermediate class purse and trophy. Intermediate class new comer, Bob Brooks, out lasted Bill Clements to secure the number two position. Clements ended third overall with Yamaha mounted Jim Dawson in fourth. Dave Me sse r, another Intermediate rider, dialed on his Ossa to bring up the fifth position. Jim Dawson and his Yamaha were once again In the spotlight, as he took the win in the 125 class for Experts and Intermediates. The reason for this duel was to give Guy some competition since no minibike could come close even with a handicap that put him somewhere in Arizona. The course was the ight one used for the mimbikes. Doug was riding a bike loaned by Rick Draudt whose only comment was for Doug not to embarrass him by losing. Both riders started even and Guy got off the line first but quickly lost it when Doug got things working. The riders were close all the way but Guy made a couple of mistakes and it cost him the race. The times for both riders put them one second apart and that's close! Mike Laney won the first 100cc Novice and Mike DUBont took the Third Division. Draudt and Jeff Coleman had the best go of the 100's as they tied for fust going into the third moto. Rick got off the line first and never gave it up. Rick said he had to get out first and see if he could hold Jeff back because he feIt Jeff's Kawasaki had more power than his own. Allen Gailliot was third. Greg White got the first of two wins as he won the First Division of 125cc Novices. Pryor Campbell was second and Rick Doyle third. Taylor Sisco took the SEcond Division with three wins but they weren't as easy as they sound because it was a close field and Taylor had to get through traffic more than once. George Gillespie, who finished second, gave Taylor more problems than anyone else and was the hardest to get around outside of David Gailliot. B. J. Hayden has to be mentioned for leading two heats a good part of the race but ended up having bike problems for his efforts. (Results on page 26) soram6Dn' aroundBy Maureen Lee t:;. Good during September Only. t:;. t:;. t:;. t:;. t:;. t:;. t:;. t:;. t:;. t:;. t:;. t:;. !!'""I"---, TORQUE GAS CAP KILL BUTTON WEBCO CATALOG The Competition Committee meetings are over now and some of the rule changes to go into the 1971 rule books have been thrashed out and the full table on them all will be available after the September .Sports Committee meeting. One change that is really a good one is that from now on all Competition Committee members must be Amateur or Expert for at least a year and participate in at least 10 races per year in the District. This will prevent a situation arising of having someone elected to a stewards job who hasn't enough background to be able to vote on important decisions carefully enough. Also the participation bit ends the problem of having a man elected and then never being around at races should his assistance be required. This has rarely happened over the years, everyone who is elected to either an office or the Committee has usually pulled their full weigh t and then some. Some of them end up pulling even more bu't you rarely hear them complain. I've been expecting Larry Haley the lightweight desert steward to be around the bend by now or at least on tranquilizers but he's still going happily along with no complaints. Why should we think he's ready for the rest cure? He has, as of now over 2700 lightweight desert riders to keep tabs on. That's what I said, 2700! I don't think the scrambles stewards can muster that many in all three divisions! Not only that, at the end of the season Larry has to pull the cards and post the points on all the riders twenty best rides for their 1971 earned number. Plus this, he is an active competitor, goes to all District meetings plus his own club and it's not that I'm singling him out for special praise because all of the guys work hard, but Larry sure has more than his fair share of the load. So you see how important it is that the people elected have a good solid background plus the initiative to work on their own at home and the time to do it all. Like everyone else, the AMA has given me some ulcers at times {and vice versa) but right now I'd like to sena Worthington a big bouquet of roses. Just when it looked like everyone and we mean everyone was on the motocross band wagon except the AMA, by George, they did it! The new racing director, Tom Clark must live up to the old saying about new brooms sweep clean because in the short time he's been in office he's really got things rolling, so as most of you have probably heard by now, we'll have a AMA-FIM sanctioned motocross series. And this year, too. From this series we'll have our tIrst profesSional ·motocross champion and you can bet the competition for the. honor will be hot and heavy. Equipment will play a tremendous part in this and you can bet your boots that most of the factories will see that their top riders have the best as it will be quite a coup for any marque to be able to say the first champion rode their brand. By the time the Inter-Ams and the AMA series are over we'll all be dizzy but between the twa of them we'll all have the opportunity to see probably every brand of motocross machine in action plus a lot more of the big European nam.es than we've seen before. I just want one peek at one of Banks' Beezer's and hope Binningham tucks in a couple of extras for Dave Aldana and Jim Rice and of course for Dick Mann. Not downgrading any of the other riders or brands of bike, BSA could well end up in the first p1ace and wouldn't that brighten the eyes of the "old-timers" who are tired of saying, "Just wait, the ring-dings haven't taken over completely yet," as season after season the ring-dings are in front. We suggest that if you don't have one, get one, a nice big calendar showing from now through December and tIll in all the published dates of District races that are big ones, like the 4-Aces Grand Prix and Hopetown, plus the two motocross series so you can plan out the ones you want to see and not miss any. It's awfully easy to let one slip by just because you didn't have it written down.
