'I- _ • ~ - ~ '"' !GREMLINS PLAGUE CMC BIKES en crj ! By David Swlft CARLSBAD, CALIF.,' Aug. 30. 1970IG The California Moto-Sport Clubdes!gned S a new bike-eating course at Carlsbad ~ for Sunday'S motocross. Equipmentfallw ure was a major factor In several races. Winner In the 500 Expert- Intermediate >- Class was Mike Cram. Cram was riding U a Matco for the ·flrst time and won only because of rare good fortune which offset rare bad fortune. He won his first race hobbling across the finish line minus several rear spokes. Next race, the 17year old Cram had a huge lead on the his d last lap when his bike sputtered to a halt. Several excited onlookers push-started him, but the bike again coughed and died. He was .out of gasl Glen Hughs. who finished right behind Cram last time. took the lead home. The crowd got Its money's worth the third time. Hughs started In a good position; Cram was Inapoorone. Hughs quickly war ked his C Z to the front. It took Cram three laps to get wllh1n strlk1ng distance of Hughs. One lap later It looked as If Hughs had It made as they were both less than a minute trom the checkered flag. As they negotiated a sharP right turn at the bottom of a steep b1II. Hughs seemed to drop his bike and start running. Actually, his rear tire blew and It was all he could do to stay on his feet. MeanwhUe, Cram cruised on home for the b1g points. Hughs had run brU1lantlY, but for his efforts had to settle for third overall. In the 500 Junior Class. a diminutive 14-year-old named Morris MaIone rode his AJS to top honors. He also took second in one division of the 250 Juniors. Ma10ne Is a good example of a rider who wins by strong and consistent performance wb1le other riders seem to beat themselves. The most curious event of the day was the 250 Expert-Intermediate contest. WbUe eight entrants started the first moto only four showed up at the second. After the starter waved his flag. Glen Lund and Briar Holcomb were neck and neck while several yards bechlnd them M. Powers and J. Jacksoo were having a race of their' own. 'IbIs went on for a couple of laps unW Lund's C Z stopped abruptlY wbUe one of the riders In the other group apparentlY fell. As a result there were three riders spread far apart and a fourth one jumping, bumping and tapping his bike In an unsuccessful attempt to make It go. The big points Ih1s time went to Holcomb. Lund did manage to make a come-back. of sorts. He was Iead1ng In the third moto with lots of room to spare. He suddenly crashed on a straight-away and relinquished his spnt to Powers. The result was a tie for first between Powers and Lund. There was one Impressive rider who will go nameless this time. He entered with the 250 Juniors and took first In A division unW someone found out he 15 a card-carrying expert In a wellknown motorcycle organlzation.Although tb1s sort of cheating 15 nothing new, riders like this stUIought to have ab1gher opinion of their abWties. The track was a new layout wb1ch kept riders plentlY busy at all times. The course also took more tba.n Its fair share of hubs. rims. and forks. Perhaps the biggest culprit was a drop.. off that one encountered right alter a small jump. Most riders found this quite difficult to negotiate because the ground under the drop 15 at an awkward. upward angle. Crash! The day was pleasant and warm and wbUe 23 members of the RESCUE first aid service were on band. none of them were really needed. But If the bikes could bleed. It would have been a different story.
